US Politicians React To Trump’s Iran Strike: ‘The Risk Of War Has Dramatically Increased’

Multiple US politicians have reacted after President Donald Trump announced that the country had bombed three nuclear sites in Iran.

The president shared news of the attacks in a Truth Social post earlier this morning, confirming the nuclear sites of Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan as the subjects of the attack.

Trump said American forces have since moved “outside of Iranian air space” and were “safely on their way home” after a “full payload of bombs” was dropped on Fordow, a heavily fortified nuclear bunker facility built underground inside Iran.

Now, a slew of politicians have come forward to address the strike, with Trump finding both support and criticism for the move on both sides of the political aisle

House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the attack, saying in a social media post that “the risk of war has now dramatically increased”.

“President Trump misled the country about his intentions, failed to seek congressional authorisation for the use of military force and risks American entanglement in a potentially disastrous war in the Middle East,” Jeffries wrote.

Meanwhile, former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders described the move by Trump as “grossly unconstitutional”, saying “the president does not have the right” to “take this country to war”.

Concerns around whether the attack was constitutional were echoed by Jim Himes, who wrote on X: “According to the Constitution we are both sworn to defend, my attention to this matter comes BEFORE bombs fall. Full stop.”

Opposing those concerns, Trump’s attack was defended by some prominent Republicans, with South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham saying Trump made “the right call”.

“The regime deserves it,” he added. “Well done, President [Trump].”

Other supporters included Arizona’s Rick Crawford — the chair of the House Intelligence Committee — who said in a statement (per ABC News) that “Iran has brought the world to this point”.

Beyond the US, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “gravely alarmed” by the strike.

“This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security,” Guterres wrote on X.

It comes amid the broader conflict between Israel and Iran that has seen the two countries engaged in more than a week of aerial combat, resulting in deaths and injuries on both sides.

Israel launched the attacks on Iran on June 13, saying it wanted to remove any chance of Tehran developing nuclear weapons — a concern which was reiterated by Trump.

Amid the conflict, Foreign Minister Penny Wong this week announced the suspension of Australia’s embassy operations in Tehran, and urged Aussies to leave the country due to “the deteriorating security environment in Iran”.
