US 'plans to seize El Chapo's $12bn fortune and scupper his final wish'

Notorious drug lord El Chapo's final wish is unlikely to be granted - with the US trying to flush out his $12bn fortune.

The 62-year-old, real name Joaquin Guzman, has called on the government in his native Mexico to leave his cash to the country's indigenous communities.

El Chapo, who headed the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel before he was jailed for life in July, even wrote to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with the request.

But his wish is unlikely to be granted, according to Duncan Wood, Director of the Wilson Centre's Mexico Institute.

He told the Daily Star that retrieving the ill-gotten gains can be difficult.

Mr Wood said: “If El Chapo did reveal the whereabouts of his wealth, I don’t think it would be him who chose to who it was given.

“I think there would be efforts on the part of the US government to seize those assets and to use them to rectify damages in the US.

“There would be efforts on the part of the Mexican government as well.”

The Mexican president has previously voiced support for El Chapo's proposal, saying: “I liked the declaration. I don’t know if it’s true, I can’t verify it.

“If it’s as it came out in the media, that a lawyer says Guzman wants his wealth to be given to Mexico’s indigenous communities, I think it’s good.”

The criminal will spend the rest of his life in a solitary cell where he will be confined for 23 hours each day.
