US Plans Global Events for 250th Anniversary Amid India Reactions

Among the headline projects is a proposed 250-foot-tall triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., alongside nationwide festivities designed to build momentum ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. The celebrations are not limited to American soil, as international outreach campaigns are also being rolled out in allied countries.

In New Delhi, the campaign has already made a visible debut. Auto-rickshaws wrapped with images of the U.S. President and messages reading “Happy Birthday America” have been unveiled as part of the “Freedom250” initiative. According to the U.S. Embassy, these vehicles will soon travel across the city, symbolizing the growing ties between India and the United States.

U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, shared visuals of the campaign on social media platform X, highlighting the significance of the milestone. He emphasized that the celebrations also serve to honor the “strength and dynamism” of the U.S.-India partnership. In a media interaction, he further noted that relations between the two nations are currently on an “incredible footing,” revealing that leaders from both countries have been in frequent contact throughout the year.

However, despite the diplomatic messaging, the campaign has sparked considerable debate among Indian citizens online. Many social media users have questioned the appropriateness of promoting another country’s national celebration so prominently on Indian streets. Some comments reflected skepticism and satire, with users suggesting reciprocal campaigns in the U.S., while others expressed concern over perceived symbolic overreach.

The criticism also appears to be influenced by recent policy decisions under Trump’s administration. Since his return to power in January 2025, several measures—such as steep reciprocal tariffs on India and a significant increase in H-1B visa fees—have impacted Indian professionals and economic sectors. Rising costs and reduced opportunities have contributed to a more critical public sentiment, particularly among those directly affected.

While the Freedom250 campaign aims to celebrate a historic milestone and strengthen diplomatic ties, its reception in India underscores the complexities of international relations, where symbolic gestures can evoke both appreciation and unease.
