US papers pioneer newsstand apps

The Kansas City Star is "rewarding" people who buy copies of its print edition at vending machines and newsstands.

If buyers respond to promotional material requesting that they "check in" after buying the paper, they will receive cheap subscription offers.

It's the result of the Star teaming up with Foursquare, a company that has pioneered location-based mobile apps.

In a similar experiment, the San Diego Union-Tribune is offering a free copy of its print edition to those who check in at newspaper kiosks.
