US Open: Unnamed player withdraws after positive coronavirus test

An unnamed player has withdrawn from the US Open after testing positive for coronavirus, just one day before its August 31 start.

The player is widely reported to be Frenchman Benoit Paire, who is showing no symptoms but will have to isolate for 10 days as per Covid-19 protocols.

A USTA statement said: "A player has tested positive for Covid-19 at the US Open and has been withdrawn from the tournament. The player is asymptomatic.

"The USTA, together with its medical advisors and infectious disease specialist from the Mount Sinai Health System, confirmed a positive test result for a player.

"In accordance with New York State Department of Health requirements, and in alignment with CDC guidelines and the tournament health and safety protocols, the player has been advised that they must isolate for at least 10 days.

"In addition, contact tracing has been initiated to determine if anyone must quarantine for 14 days."

Paire, who was seeded 17th, was due to open his tournament against Poland's Kamil Majchrzak on Tuesday.

The Frenchman featured in the Western & Southern Open last week at the same venue of Flushing Meadows, having been in the New York-based bio-secure bubble for a couple of weeks.

Paire retired early from his first-round match against Borna Coric with illness, however, trailing 6-0, 1-0 at the time.

The 31-year-old's US Open replacement in the draw has not been announced yet.
