ERIN, Wis. _ A 94-year-old man died Friday afternoon while watching the U.S. Open at Erin Hills, the USGA said. He appeared to have died of natural causes, according to authorities.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with those surrounding this individual during this difficult time," the USGA said in a statement.
According to the Washington County sheriff's office, at about 1:25 p.m., Hartford rescue personnel were dispatched to the grandstand at the sixth hole when a man was reported to be without a pulse and not breathing.
Rescue personnel arrived within three minutes and began CPR, the sheriff's office said. The man, from Wauwatosa, Wis., was transferred to an on-site ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.
The second round at Erin Hills was played under sunny skies with comfortable conditions. Temperatures were in the low 80s with a light breeze.
Meanwhile, the pilot of a blimp that crashed Thursday morning just east of the golf course reportedly remains in serious condition. Trevor Thompson was operating an advertising blimp that deflated, burst into flames and crashed.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
