US Open set for September switch due to coronavirus pandemic but will remain at Winged Foot

The US Open will become the third golf Major of 2020 to be postponed, with the subsequent Open at Royal St George’s in July also increasingly under threat.

Already both the Masters and PGA Championship have been delayed from their April and May spots on the calendar and now the US Open — which is scheduled for June 18-21 at Winged Foot — is set to be moved.

The official announcement has yet to be made but the event, won last year by Gary Woodland, is expected to be switched to September and remain at the same venue.

A spokesperson for the United States Golf Association, said: “Nothing is official. Obviously, we’re talking about it, knowing what’s going on in New York [with Covid-19 cases].”

The Royal and Ancient have already warned The Open, which they run, is under threat and could be postponed or played behind closed doors.

R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers had said: “We recognise this is a rapidly changing situation and we will keep everyone informed of any changes to our plans.”
