US Open: Pebble Beach divers to clear 'five million' golf balls from sea bed

From Rory McIlroy to the average weekend hacker, no golfer needs reminding that they should avoid water. Yet that is how the Pebble Beach Golf Company plans to instruct the players competing in the US Open over the next four days.

Inspired by environmentalist Alex Weber, Pebble Beach have agreed to conduct 200 diving missions per year, for the next five years, to rid the sea bed of golf balls. Weber’s research estimates there are up to five million balls in Pebble Beach’s Stillwater Cove alone.

“We had no idea what it would become when this started,” said Weber, 19.

“It was really exciting to see that they’ve taken those first steps and hopefully they become a leader in the golf industry — showing other courses how to run their sustainability programs."

So there you have it. Keeping the ball on the fairway doesn’t just improve your scorecard – it helps save the planet too.
