US Open live: Draper-Pegula book semi-final spot after dispatching Raducanu-Alcaraz in new mixed doubles event

The new, and controversial, US Open mixed doubles event is underway with big names and star players set to headline the tournament.

But two of the biggest attractions were knocked out early: Carlos Alcaraz, fresh from his win at the Cincinnati Open, and British No 1 Emma Raducanu were toppled by the top-seeded pair of fellow British No 1 Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula in the round-of-16.

The top seeds made a strong pairing, winning 4-2, 4-2 to book their place in the last eight, before dispatching Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva 4-1, 4-1 later on Tuesday to set up a semi-final clash against third seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud.

The new-look mixed doubles in New York is staged on the two biggest courts – Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong – over Tuesday 19 August and Wednesday 20 August with the $1m on offer for the champion prize. The revamped format, and its disregard for doubles specialists, has proved controversial, however.

Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the event, as he had been expected to after the World No. 1 pulled out of the Cincinnati final through illness partway through the opening set with Alcaraz leading 5-0. Sinner is fully focused on recovering in time for the US Open singles.

Draper/Pegula set up last-four clash

22:54 , Flo Clifford

Draper says they will prepare with “total professionalism” for their semi-final tomorrow, a tongue-in-cheek comment given the exhibition feel of this event. Not that these two seem to be treating it that way when they’re on court; they’re pretty locked in.

They’ll play third seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud tomorrow night after winning 4-1, 4-1 today.

Third time lucky!

22:50 , Flo Clifford

The top seeds are into the semi-finals! A spirited defence by Medvedev and Andreeva, but a Draper smash has too much heft on it for Medvedev and he clatters it into the net.

Pegula and Draper are looking like a pretty well-oiled machine despite their newness as a partnership.

Match point saved...

22:46 , Flo Clifford

*Draper/Pegula 4-1, 3-1 Medvedev/Andreeva

And they stay alive! Pegula hits into the net.

Now Draper will serve for the match.

Match point

22:45 , Flo Clifford

Draper/Pegula 4-1, 3-0 Medvedev/Andreeva*

A game away for the top seeds, who are looking very businesslike indeed. Over on Louis Armstrong, Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison are 4-1, 1-1 up against Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton.

Andreeva’s serve is crumbling a little... Pegula and Draper have a match point but Medvedev sets up deciding point with another one of those ludicrous, sharply-angled cross-court beauties.

Early break for top seeds

22:38 , Flo Clifford

The crowds have thinned out now - perhaps after all the hype, they’d have preferred to see Alcaraz/Raducanu in this encounter than Draper/Pegula, even with a home player in the mix.

The top seeds survive a deciding point to hold in the first game of set two... and Medvedev finds himself struggling on serve; Andreeva looks to have won the deciding point but puts too much on a lob and Draper/Pegula lead 2-0.

Draper/Pegula take first set

22:28 , Flo Clifford

Quick as a flash Pegula holds serve and the top seeds then race to set point, 0-40 up on the Medvedev serve... but Draper palms into the net from close range.

Draper goes long on a second serve, and smart play by Andreeva, splicing the ball down the centre as both Draper and Pegula go for it, brings up deuce.

A brilliant point follows with every inch of the court covered; Andreeva looks to have won it several times but ultimately a lob lands just long of the baseline! 4-1.

Top seeds with early break

22:24 , Flo Clifford

Andreeva, under pressure on serve, does brilliantly to keep the ball in the court, at full stretch deep behind the baseline, and Medvedev looks surprised as he keeps a volley just in for deuce.

But Pegula and Draper snatch the early break.

On serve in first set

22:18 , Flo Clifford

After a little over 10 minutes to recover from their first-round win, Medvedev and Andreeva are back on court to face Draper and Pegula in their quarter-final.

It’s on serve in the early stages as Andreeva skews a second serve return off the Draper serve wide.

Collins/Harrison into quarter-finals

22:02 , Flo Clifford

Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison had to work a bit harder in their second set, ultimately prevailing 4-0, 5-3 over Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev.

They’ll face Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton next.

Medvedev and Andreeva seal last-eight spot!

21:56 , Flo Clifford

Djokovic nets to bring up 40-0 and match point on the Andreeva serve, mere minutes after he was 3-1 up.

Danilovic can’t keep a booming serve by Andreeva in the court, goes long, and that’s it! 4-2, 5-3 for the Russians, who made a good team out there, Medvedev in particular improving as the match went on, with Andreeva - although technically the junior partner - a very strong doubles player and keeping the ship steady.

Djokovic doesn’t look too upset, smiling at the net and waving to the crowd as he heads off to sign some autographs.

Momentum swings

21:53 , Flo Clifford

After that poor service game from Danilovic momentum has totally swung the other way. Medvedev is storming around the court like a madman and seals a break of the Djokovic serve with a dash to the net to retrieve a Danilovic volley before firing a sublime forehand cross-court. They now lead 4-3!

Andreeva will serve for the match.

Breaks exchanged in tight Arthur Ashe battle

21:47 , Flo Clifford

Andreeva is in trouble for the first time on serve and the Serbian pair seal the break for 3-1.

But she does brilliantly to return a huge, wide serve by Danilovic and forces an error... oh, but Medvedev overcooks a forehand and the Serbians lead 40-30. Set point... Danilovic double faults for deuce!

Unbelievable. Another double fault and Medvedev and Andreeva break back! 3-2.

Americans in control on Louis Armstrong

21:37 , Flo Clifford

Over on the other show court, Danielle Collins and her partner Christian Harrison - who only stepped in at the last minute as alternates after Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova withdrew - have swatted aside Belina Bencic and Alexander Zverev in the first set, winning 4-0.

Medvedev and Andreeva seal opening set

21:33 , Flo Clifford

21 minutes on the clock and it’s the Russian pair who take the first set 4-2. Danilovic has looked a little bit tentative and Medvedev and Andreeva have capitalised, Medvevdev hopping around the court with real sprightliness despite being 6’6”.

On serve in opening set

21:24 , Flo Clifford

Djokovic does a little victory dance as he blasts a winner past Medvedev to bring up break point o Andreeva’s serve.

But Danilovic nets on the next ball and kicks her leg out in frustration.

And Medvedev plays a sublime, super-speedy backhand volley to win it! That looked like it surprised everyone. 2-2 and on serve.

Djokovic holds serve under pressure

21:15 , Flo Clifford

Danilovic makes a hash of a net volley but Djokovic rescues things with a pair of fine serves for 40-30 - but Danilovic overheads into the net again!

An early deciding point on the Djokovic serve.

Medvedev nets.

Danilovic/Djokovic take on Andreeva/Medvedev

21:11 , Flo Clifford

Another fascinating contest is about to unfold. Djokovic looks laid-back and happy as he warms up alongside compatriot Danilovic, the lowest-profile member of this quartet. On the other side of the net are an almost brother-sisterly dynamic, Medvedev and Andreeva.

Djokovic has only ever played one mixed doubles match, nearly twenty years ago. He’ll serve first.

Townsend and Shelton into last eight

21:05 , Flo Clifford

Over on Louis Armstrong, Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton saw off fourth seeds Amanda Anisimova/Holger Rune, 4-2 5-4(7-2).

Quarter-finals await

20:57 , Flo Clifford

The top seeds Draper and Pegula will be in action again later tonight. They’ll face the winners of the next match: an intriguing contest between the all-Serbian pair of Olga Danilovic/Novak Djokovic and the all-Russian team of Mirra Andreeva/Daniil Medvedev.

'A pleasure to be out here' - Jack Draper

20:52 , Flo Clifford

Sloane Stephens interviews the winners. How was Draper’s first doubles win? “I’ve got a pretty good partner,” he says, “what an experience playing out here, playing Emma and Carlos, it doesn’t get any better than this. A pleasure to be out here.”

Pegula thanks everyone for showing up and the “fun atmosphere”, “even if it meant a couple of highlight-reel shots by Carlos to get the crowd going,” she grins. “It was a lot of fun, Jack played great.”

What are they going to do before their quarter-final? “Just chill,” is the consensus.

Pegula/Draper seal last-eight spot

20:50 , Flo Clifford

A brilliant last game but it’s the top seeds who come out on top, covering nearly every inch of the court before Draper hammers a forehand winner down the line. Both he and Pegula were seriously impressive today.

Hugs and smiles at the net.

Deciding point...

20:48 , Flo Clifford

The crowd are fired up again now and so are Alcaraz and Raducanu after digging themselves out of a hole in that game.

Alcaraz crouches at the net and palms away the ball at an awkward angle for Draper - but then goes long for 15-15 as Pegula serves. He grins, well aware that was a golden chance.

Pegula stands firm and Draper gives Alcaraz a taste of his own medicine with a nifty slam towards the body.

But Draper goes wildly long for 30-30... but Pegula brings up a fourth match point, slamming down the line with Alcaraz and Raducanu out of position.

“Shot,” Pegula appears to say as Raducanu blasts cross-court to bring up another deciding point.

Raducanu holds under pressure

20:42 , Flo Clifford

Raducanu is in a spot of bother on serve again and Draper, who has rarely put a foot wrong so far today, hammers in a ferocious volley for match point at 40-15.

He nets on the next ball, a strong serve by his compatriot.

And a fine ace from Raducanu - the first for this team - brings up deuce, and deciding point!

Alcaraz stands firm at the net and keeps them alive, as a backpedalling Draper sends long!

Pegula/Draper one game from quarter-finals

20:38 , Flo Clifford

Draper, by the way, is in new kit, having signed a new deal with the brand Vuori.

He blasts down three impressive serves to lead 40-0, then overpowers Raducanu with a low-flying forehand that she dips into the net. One game away for the top seeds.

Pegula/Draper seal break

20:36 , Flo Clifford

Pegula and Draper snatch a break to lead 2-1, as Raducanu gets an overhead wrong and sends it wide.

Over on Louis Armstrong, Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton lead the fourth seeds Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune 4-2, 2-2.

Top seeds hold

20:32 , Flo Clifford

Alcaraz catches the ball all wrong on Pegula’s serve and it cannons off his racquet into the sky.

Now a moment of madness from Alcaraz as Draper sends the ball cross-court past Raducanu, but the Spaniard sprints beyond the tramline to whip it beyond the post! Raducanu grins in delight and even Pegula and Draper are impressed.

Draper comes out on top in the next net exchange, hammering it close to Alcaraz, and we’re on serve.

Raducanu escapes break point

20:28 , Flo Clifford

Quite different demeanour in these teams: Raducanu and Alcaraz are laughing and joking around in between points, while Draper and Pegula are a little more reserved. It’s the top seeds who are on top so far, though.

40-15 up on serve, Raducanu double faults, and a return skews well wide for deuce. The deciding point goes their way, however, as Alcaraz holds court at the net, sending Draper scrambling.

(REUTERS)

Second set

20:23 , Flo Clifford

That deciding point illustrated one of the perils of playing two people who have never played together in a mixed doubles team. Alcaraz and Raducanu both went as if to hit the ball, there was a moment of hesitation, and Alcaraz hit long, handing over the set.

Pegula/Draper seal opening set

20:21 , Flo Clifford

Raducanu grimaces as she sends a drive volley straight at the body of Pegula, forcing the American to duck to avoid it - and it lands within the baseline!

But Draper whips a forehand down the line for set point - then nets on the next rally! 40-30.

Alcaraz then dominates at the net and although Draper dives to the net post to retrieve a shot, the Spaniard plants the winner straight into the open court.

But he goes long on the deciding point, and Pegula/Draper have the opening set! 4-2.

Alcaraz holds, Draper to serve for set

20:17 , Flo Clifford

More loud cheers as Alcaraz moves towards a love hold, and Raducanu plants away the volley to keep their deficit to 3-2. There’s a great atmosphere on Arthur Ashe.

(REUTERS)

Pegula holds

20:14 , Flo Clifford

Not the most inspiring tennis in this one so far. Raducanu and Pegula get in a hefty baseline exchange before the Brit skews the ball a fraction long; there’s a chance at 30-30 before Alcaraz gets a routine net volley all wrong, dumping into the tape.

Alcaraz launches the ball well long and Pegula/Draper lead 3-1.

Raducanu on the board

20:09 , Flo Clifford

Raducanu finds herself in a spot of bother on serve but there are smiles all around - and cheers from the crowd - as she holds to 30, Alcaraz smashing in to seal the game. The pair seem to be having a lot of fun so far.

(REUTERS)

Draper backs up break

20:06 , Flo Clifford

Draper is looking fired up in the early stages of this one. He gets into a rally with his compatriot and seals it with a volley, combining booming groundstrokes with some decent movement around the net.

The pair quickly lead 2-0 - although it’s mostly been Draper doing the work so far.

Draper/Pegula seal early break

20:01 , Flo Clifford

Loud cheers, as you would expect, as Alcaraz steps up to serve.

But a mishap of a volley from Raducanu, some deft net play from Draper and an Alcaraz error sees them go 0-40 down...

Alcaraz saves one break point, but Draper fires in a forehand to secure an early break!

Play underway shortly

20:00 , Flo Clifford

The next set of first-round matches will be underway very shortly, with Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu the star attraction for UK audiences - just on opposite sides of the net.

They partner Jessica Pegula and newly-crowned Cincinnati champion Carlos Alcaraz respectively.

Over on Louis Armstrong, there’s plenty of US interest as Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton take on Amanda Animisova and Holger Rune, the fourth seeds.

Singles stars out on Arthur Ashe

19:51 , Flo Clifford

Huge cheers greet the arrivals of a smiling Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu onto Arthur Ashe, before a more businesslike-looking Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula walk out.

Tonight's order of play

ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM

Swiatek/Ruud into semi-finals

19:37 , Flo Clifford

And over on Arthur Ashe, Swiatek and Ruud have made light work of McNally and Musetti, winning 4-1 4-2.

With these two quarter-finals over, it’s almost time for the Battle of the Brits: Jack Draper and partner Jessica Pegula will play Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu next.

Errani/Vavassori move one step closer to defending their crown

19:34 , Flo Clifford

Vavassori’s reflexes are just stunning as he recovers from a Rublev body serve, firing away at the net to retrieve one point of the deficit. The pair share a nice hug at the net.

Now the Italian pair roar as they nullify the mini-break entirely, Errani’s deft touch coaxing an error from Rublev, who fires long for 4-4.

“Forza” shouts Errani as she lobs to lead 5-4. Vavassori has two serves... their opponents send it long to hand the Italians match point.

Rublev goes long again and the Italians are into the semi-finals! The pair bump heads and scream with delight. It means an enormous amount to these two. 4-1, 5-4.

Tie-break to decide second set

19:30 , Flo Clifford

Errani holds to send this one to a tie-break. Over on Arthur Ashe, Swiatek/Ruud lead 3-2 in another close second set.

And it’s Muchova and Rublev who get an early mini-break, the Czech lobbing the ball over the head of Vavassori.

An error from the Italian sees them fall 3-1 behind, and Muchova blasts a cross-court forehand which skims past Rublev, stunning her partner! He grins and gestures as if to say it nearly took his ear off.

They lead 4-2 at the change of ends.

Crunch time on Louis Armstrong

19:24 , Flo Clifford

The crowd goes wild! Muchova and Rublev dig very, very deep in the Czech’s service game over on Louis Armstrong, withstanding a barrage at the net to dink the ball over the net and seal the deciding point for 4-3. The pair look very relieved and celebrate passionately.

On serve in second set

19:14 , Flo Clifford

A spirited Muchova volley lands splat in the middle of the court and we remain on serve in this one, with the Czech and Rublev leading 3-2.

Swiatek/Ruud and McNally/Musetti are locked at 1-1 in the second as both matches prove more competitive.

Specialists on top

19:03 , Flo Clifford

Errani and Vavassori duly take the first set 4-1, as do Swiatek and Ruud by the same scoreline. Both teams are speeding through this one; Vavassori holds to 15 with a quick service game for 1-1 in the second set.

Italians motoring through

18:53 , Flo Clifford

After going down an early break Errani and Vavassori are well in control of this one, leading 3-1 as they break the Muchova serve.

Over in the other quarter-final, Swiatek and Ruud lead McNally and Musetti 2-1.

Errani/Vavassori lead

18:48 , Flo Clifford

Errani and Vavassori respond by immediately breaking back, breaking the Rublev serve. They clearly mean business.

The Czech/Russian pair trouble them a little on Errani’s serve, but a Rublev error puts the fired-up Italians in front, 2-1 up.

Quarter-finals underway

18:41 , Flo Clifford

And after about ten minutes, it’s time for the first of today’s quarter-finals. Muchova and Rublev take on Errani and Vavassori.

And it’s Muchova and Rublev who strike first, breaking the Vavassori serve!

Swiatek/Ruud beat Tiafoe/Keys

18:30 , Flo Clifford

Very efficient from third seeds Casper Ruud and Iga Swiatek, who beat another all-American pair in Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys. 4-2, 4-1 in 39 minutes. Formats may change, but Swiatek scorelines stay the same.

It’s the Pole who seals the deal with a fine stroke than dips just inside the baseline. They’ll face Caty McNally/Lorenzo Musetti in just a few minutes.

“She’s on a winning train these days and I’m just jumping on the train,” Ruud says of his partner. Both add that having played against each other in the United Cup, they had an idea of how they would work as a pairing, despite the lack of preparation time.

Rublev/Muchova to play Errani/Vavassori

18:25 , Flo Clifford

“We came out here to have fun, Reilly his serves - I think we made one return, maybe two!” Muchova says.

“Karolina did unbelievable things,” Rublev says of his partner’s performance, “I don’t know how many players from men’s tour can do this. I have no idea what I’m doing when I’m playing but I’m trying to do my job!” the Russian adds.

The pair will return to action in only a few minutes to take on a daunting task: Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.

Rublev/Muchova seal place in second round

18:18 , Flo Clifford

Muchova steals a rare point off the Opelka serve as she forces Williams into a net error, and Rublev looks amazed.

He thinks he’s won the match with a brilliant serve-and-smash combo, but will play at least one more point! Laughs all round.

Match point... Opelka nets a second serve, and the Americans are out! 4-2, 5-4(7-4).

Muchova/Rublev on top

18:14 , Flo Clifford

Screams of delight from the crowd as Muchova/Rublev and Williams/Opelka get into a tense, tight, net exchange, with the Czech forcing an error from Williams to lead 2-1 in this tiebreak.

Rublev bows down in appreciation of his partner’s brilliance, before blasting a return at Williams, forcing another error for an early mini-break.

The Americans pull one back but Muchova plays a stunningly deft low volley, with Rublev slamming away a smash to lead 4-2.

Tie-break!

18:09 , Flo Clifford

Muchova holds serve to 15 for 4-4 and a seven-point tiebreak will be played to settle this set.

Ruud fires third seeds to first set

18:02 , Flo Clifford

Iga Swiatek certainly doesn’t look hampered by her less than 24 hour turnaround from winning Cincinnati to playing in New York. She and Casper Ruud take the first set 4-1 against Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe, the Norwegian firing down an ace to seal it.

In the other match, Williams hits long and Rublev/Muchova level things at 3-3 in the second set. First to five games now, but if it goes to 4-4, there will be a tiebreak.

On serve in second set

17:52 , Flo Clifford

Opelka and Williams dig themselves out of trouble in the second set, winning a deciding point - to raucous applause from the partisan crowd - to move 2-1 ahead, on serve.

Over on Arthur Ashe, third seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud are an early break up against Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe.

Rublev and Muchova seal first set

17:40 , Flo Clifford

Oohs and ahhs from the crowd as Rublev and Muchova produce some delightful tennis to take the first set 4-2. This makeshift pair has combined well so far, with Muchova’s net ability and craftiness complementing the ferocity of Rublev’s groundstrokes. A tidy volley from the Russian seals the set.

Muchova/Rublev lead Williams/Opelka

17:35 , Flo Clifford

Over on Louis Armstrong, Karolina Muchova’s guile has put her and Andrey Rublev against 45-year-old Venus Williams and her partner Reilly Opelka - a man who has notably poured scorn on doubles in the past.

The big American batters down some aces, finishing with a second-serve ace, to keep their deficit to just one break at 3-2.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! McNally/Musetti 5-3 4-2 Osaka/Monfils

17:24 , Jamie Braidwood

We have our second winners of the day! And it’s a eye-catching partnership between Caty McNally, a two-time grand slam doubles finalist, and Lorenzo Musetti that prevails over Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils, who are smiling and laughing as they leave the court.

Certainly, McNally and Musetti look to be a serious doubles partnership, despite only meeting a few days ago, with some potential to go the distance. I don’t think Osaka and Monfils are too concerned to be out already as they take a selfie before leaving the court.

McNally and Musett go up against either Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud or Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe next.

Andrea Vavassori: 'We were playing for the doubles teams who could not be here'

17:03 , Jamie Braidwood

Well, Andrea Vavassori basically just confirmed what I was wondering in the last post.

The Italian says during his post-match interview: “We were playing for the doubles teams who could not be here.”

I think they could take some stopping, despite the star power of some of the singles players in the draw.

They will take on either Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka or Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev, who are up next.

Venus Williams is obviously a huge draw as she returns to the US Open at the age of 45.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Errani/Vavassori 4-2 4-2 Rybakina/Fritz

16:56 , Jamie Braidwood

The defending champions go marching on! A big win for the Italian doubles partners Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who dump out Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina. They were certainly playing with some heat, and one suspects they were playing for all the doubles players who have been excluded form this revamped competition.

They were excellent, and fly through to the quarter-finals in just over 40 minutes. Huge celebrations and a butt of the heads between the pair as Vavassori lands a smash. 4-2 4-2.

Errani and Vavassori move one game away

16:53 , Jamie Braidwood

Stirring stuff from Errani and Vavassori as they bring up three break points with a brilliantly constructed points against the Fritz serve. The American saves three in a row behind serve, with two aces, but Rybakina then frames a volley at the net!

Errani and Vavassori will serve for the match next, with Vavassori to serve.

FIRST SET! Errani and Vavassori strike first!

16:34 , Jamie Braidwood

We have our first completed set in the US Open mixed doubles - a reminder that the format is best-of-three sets to four games - and it goes the way of the defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. The Italian pair convert the only break to lead Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina, the scoreline 4-2 in the first set.

The defending champions and doubles specialist are playing with a point to prove.

US Open mixed doubles

16:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Brilliant early point in the Musetti/McNally vs Monfils/Osaka match! Osaka first with the big forehand down the line, defended well by Musetti at the back of the court. Eventually, Monfils was able to put the overhead away.

US Open mixed doubles

16:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Some interesting observations from the match of Arthur Ashe early on, including Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti serving faster balls at Gael Monfils than Naomi Osaka. The Olympic bronze medalist took almost 50mph off his serve when serving to Osaka.

And the doubles specialist in this match, Caty McNally, is being the most decisive player at the net. A few misses so far from the American, but the movement and sense of where to be in position is clearly way ahead of the other three, who are far more accustomed to singles.

An update from Jannik Sinner after pulling out of US Open mixed doubles

16:12 , Jamie Braidwood

A post from Jannik Sinner confirming that he is looking forward to resting “for a couple of days” after pulling out of the US Open mixed doubles before “getting back to work”.

Players on court ahead of start of US Open mixed doubles

16:08 , Jamie Braidwood

To be fair, for all the critics that the new US Open mixed double event has had, there are plenty of fans in the Arthur Ashe Arena for the start of play. Perhaps a lot of fans who wouldn’t get the chance to take in the US Open during the fortnight, too.

It’s not sold-out, are there are some more empty seats on Louis Armstrong, but a decent turnout.

US Open mixed doubles getting underway soon

15:57 , Jamie Braidwood

So the first couple of matches of the new-look US Open mixed doubles are about to begin. On Arthur Ashe, we have former US Open singles champion Naomi Osaka partnering the entertaining and ever popular Gael Monfils, who stepped in to replace Nick Kyrgios. They are in action against Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti.

But the match to look out for is the one involving the doubles specialists and defending US Open mixed champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who are up against singles players in Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina.

Errani and Vavassori were very outspoken in their criticism of the new event - so this is something of a grudge match for them.

Matches coming up:

Naomi Osaka/Gael Monfils vs Caty McNally/Lorenzo Musetti

Sara Errani/Andrea Vavassori vs Elena Rybakina/Taylor Fritz (2)

Jannik Sinner withdraws from mixed doubles

15:26 , Flo Clifford

It’s official: Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the mixed doubles tournament this week.

The US Open stated: “The team of Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova has withdrawn from the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship presented by Vital Proteins.

“Their place in the draw will be filled by an alternate team with the highest combined singles ranking that signs in by 10:30 a.m. today, with priority to those that had been entered by the initial July 28 deadline.”
