US Open mixed doubles LIVE!

Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu united in an unlikely partnership this evening as the revamped US Open mixed doubles event got underway at Flushing Meadows, but they were bested by the top seeds Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula in a thrilling first-round match on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The star-studded draw has seen a real shake-up this year with most of the sport’s elite lured into taking part, with the tournament moved to ‘fan week’ - half a week before the singles draws commence - in order to allow ample recovery time before the players bid for the final Grand Slam title of the year.

Pegula and Draper were seeded first in the new format - with seeding based off combined singles’ rankings - and the American and Briton showed superb teamwork to oust the all-star wildcard duo, with both pairs receiving hero receptions from the packed crowd in New York, New York.

Earlier in the day, Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils were beaten by Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti, and then Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud beat American pair Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe. Swiatek and Ruud then booked their place in Wednesday’s semi-final with a straight-sets victory over McNally and Musetti. Follow all the action with our live blog below!

Post-match thoughts

20:51 , Oli Gent

“I’ve got a pretty good partner,” Draper jokes.

“It was a lot of fun, Jack played great,” Pegula said.

Game, set, and match! Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-4 2-4 Pegula/Draper

20:49 , Oli Gent

It’s the home favourite Pegula serving for a place in the last eight.

The top seeds have been full-throttle, but they’re caught out as Alcaraz goes early out of nowhere at the net, quickly seizing upon the ball to pat down a winner. 0-15.

The Spaniard overcooks the backhand return as he looks to approach aggressively alongside Raducanu, and he knows that was a chance as he shakes his head in disgust. 15-15.

Raducanu and Pegula are entangled in a big baseline exchange, with the American hitting huge before Draper steps in with a surprise backhand volley that Alcaraz can’t react to in time. 30-15.

Draper gets overzealous on the forehand side as the top seeds blow a point that seemed to be in control of, and suddenly it’s 30-30.

Raducanu is looking to take it to Pegula with heavy hitting on the forehand side, but the American outsmarts Alcaraz, seeing his move early and playing it down the line for the winner!

Match point No4, but this one goes awry, as Alcaraz goes for the angled inside-out forehands, before Raducanu takes over with a cross-court winner of her own!

Another match point on sudden-death deuce, and what a way to finish! Raducanu does outstandingly to reach the short balls from deep, but Draper digs out a lovely forehand winner down the line to close out the victory!

Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-4 2-3 Pegula/Draper

20:42 , Oli Gent

So it’s Raducanu serving to keep the all-star duo in the tournament.

They’re off to a good start, as Draper sends a backhand long and Raducanu holds her own in the baseline rally with the men’s world No5.

She nets a backhand, however, from Pegula’s heavy return, and the American gets on top of the net to force Alcaraz to deflect his volley high and long. 15-30.

Draper is electric at the net, with a confident volley putaway to set up three match points.

The first is saved as Draper nets the forehand return, and Raducanu earns the pair’s first ace to tee up sudden-death deuce!

The pressure is still on with match point No3, but Alcaraz does his bit, sending down two thunderous smashes to keep them in it!

Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-4 1-3 Pegula/Draper

20:38 , Oli Gent

Super start from Draper with an ace down the T, and it’s 30-0 soon after as Alcaraz looks to the heavens after netting a routine backhand return.

Raducanu can’t keep hers under control either, and it’s 40-0 in double-quick time. Alcaraz and Draper begin blasting forehands at each other before the Briton changes tack to surprise Raducanu, who can’t direct it over the net.

Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-4 1-2 Pegula/Draper

20:35 , Oli Gent

Break! Pegula just gets caught making the move into the net a fraction late, and is forced to have to pick one off her toes, which she can only deflect long. 15-0.

Alcaraz has found his serving rhythm, but he’s on his bike as Draper goes up for a smash. The Spaniard gets his racquet to it, but it just lands the wrong side of the net. 15-15.

Draper spins a backhand return into the serve-and-volleying Spaniard’s feet, and the French Open champion can only steer the approach shot into the net. 15-30, chance here.

Pressure averted, slightly. Pegula can’t control her backhand return which balloons long, but Raducanu, after initially showing great hands to get Draper’s lasered return back, misses the follow-up volley.

Break point here, which they take, as Raducanu can’t get her racquet head around the overhead backhand volley!

Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-4 1-1 Pegula/Draper

20:31 , Oli Gent

Superb body serve from Pegula which Raducanu can hardly do anything about, and Draper is on top of the net to smash it away. 15-0.

Alcaraz then leans back and misjudges an inside-out forehand for 30-0, and Draper punishes a Raducanu backhand slice with a devastating drop-volley winner.

Three game points, and the first one is saved with an absolutely sensational bit of play from Alcaraz! Raducanu did so well to soak up the power and pressure off Draper’s forehand, and she’s walking to the change after she thinks her compatriot’s backhand has got the better of her, but little does she know, Alcaraz darts in and steers a forehand down the line for a winner! 40-15.

His work goes in vain, however, as Draper does the damage at the net once more.

Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-4 1-0 Pegula/Draper

20:28 , Oli Gent

Raducanu is back on serve, but Alcaraz gets the ball caught at his feet as he looks to improvise with a backhand half-volley. 0-15.

Pegula looks for the front-footed return off the backhand, but she nets to level the scores. 15-15.

That’s a good, accurate delivery from Raducanu, which Draper hits long, and the Briton arrows one down the middle as Pegula sends it out on the stretch.

Two game points, but she spurns the first with a double fault.

Words of encouragement from Alcaraz attempt to calm her down, but after a good first serve down the middle, she shanks a forehand wide.

Sudden-death deuce, and the pressure is on here, but that is simply splendid from both Raducanu and Alcaraz! She holds her nerve with a great serve, and competes in the baseline exchange with Pegula, before Alcaraz steps in at the net with two simple volleys.

Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-4 Pegula/Draper

20:22 , Oli Gent

Set! That is superb from Raducanu! Alcaraz blasts a forehand at Pegula, who shows great hands to get it back, and then Raducanu delivers with the drive-volley through the American for 0-15.

Alcaraz then misses his return for 15-15, and Raducanu tries to guide a looped return in, but it flies long off the deuce-court. 30-15.

A sublime Draper forehand winner down the line catches Raducanu out as the leftie spins a beauty inside the tramlines for two set points. 40-15.

Draper nets a forehand after some strong defence from both Alcaraz and Raducanu in the mid-court, and Alcaraz is at his very best, putting on the burners to deliver at the net. Pegula tries to re-direct the Spaniard, but he acrobatically diverts it the other way for the winner.

However, a little bit of indecision from Alcaraz on the forehand return means that they lose the sudden-death deuce, and Pegula and Draper are a set up!

Raducanu/Alcaraz 2-3 Pegula/Draper

20:16 , Oli Gent

Alcaraz is back on serve, and his delivery out wide has Draper at full stretch. That’s one for Raducanu to put away overhead, and she duly does to open the scoring in this game.

That’s lovely from the Spaniard, kicking the ball wide to ace Pegula, and he’s in his flow now as he aces Draper down the T for 40-0.

He accurately goes for Pegula’s body, and that gives Raducanu the simplest of volley winners to close out the hold!

Raducanu/Alcaraz 1-3 Pegula/Draper

20:14 , Oli Gent

A good move from Alcaraz to blast a return winner off the first Pegula serve, and Draper does well to follow up at the net to level.

Raducanu is unlucky as she looks to go between Pegula and Draper with a forehand pass, but she misses the baseline by a fraction. 30-15.

However, the pressure is on the American as she puts a backhand wide for 30-30. Alcaraz then spurns a real chance low down at the net, as he palms a forehand volley into the cord!

Pegula earns the hold, standing strong against the Alcaraz inside-out forehand, which the Spaniard blazes wide.

Raducanu/Alcaraz 1-2 Pegula/Draper

20:08 , Oli Gent

A blistering Draper backhand winner punishes a slow Raducanu serve for 0-15, with Pegula telling her team that she’s not hit a ball yet!

We have a first real chaos at the net before the ball loops deeper, and Draper gets overexcited on the forehand side as he blazes one long. 15-15.

A double fault from Raducanu piles the pressure on the 2021 champion at Flushing Meadows, and she does brilliantly to keep with Pegula in the baseline exchange before Alcaraz steps in nimbly with a backhand volley that takes Draper by surprise. 30-30.

That, however, is a fantastic serve to the Draper body from Raducanu, as her compatriot miscues his backhand, which flies long. She then fires another down the T, and Alcaraz follows it up with a smash putaway! They’re on the board.

Raducanu/Alcaraz 0-2 Pegula/Draper

20:05 , Oli Gent

Draper has the ball in hand now after the change of ends, and he serves to Raducanu first. It’s Raducanu who wins the battle of the Brits, as Alcaraz’s movement across the net puts Draper off, and he skews a backhand wide. That’s much better from the Brit, though, as he approaches the net with confidence and puts away the backhand volley to restore parity.

Raducanu gets nowhere near the booming serve down the T for 30-15, but Draper wears his compatriot down with some strong hitting off both flanks, before finishing with a devastating dropshot winner that dies away.

Two game points, which Pegula puts away with great confidence on the top of the net after an accurate Draper serve wide to the Raducanu forehand.

Raducanu/Alcaraz 0-1 Pegula/Draper

20:01 , Oli Gent

Break! Alcaraz serves first, and he goes to the Draper body. The Briton does well to squeeze a backhand into play, and Raducanu misses the follow-up volley to kick us off.

An encouraging early move from Draper as he gets on top of the net to put away a volley for 0-30, before we see the first baseline exchange between the two men. Draper comes out on top, with Alcaraz overcooking a backhand.

Three break points straight away at 0-40, but a huge forehand down the middle has Draper palm one long to save the first.

However, they convert the second, as a tentative volley from Raducanu is punished by Draper, who loops a leftie forehand over the top of his compatriot to secure the early break!

New York conditions

19:54 , Oli Gent

It’s 24 degrees celsius in Queens, with the humidity down at 36%. It was as high as 74% earlier this afternoon.

Raducanu and Alcaraz to serve!

19:53 , Oli Gent

Pegula and Draper win the toss, and opt to receive.

Here they come!

19:51 , Oli Gent

Raducanu and Alcaraz step onto court all smiles, greeted by the biggest roar of the day so far!

Pegula and Draper are met with a similar reception.

This one should be a classic.

Here we go!

19:43 , Oli Gent

What we’ve all been waiting for.

Raducanu and Alcaraz are set to take to Arthur Ashe Stadium to face the top seeds Jack Draper and Jessie Pegula.

Around the courts

19:35 , Oli Gent

Sara Errani & Andrea Vavassori bt Karolina Muchova & Andrey Rublev 4-1 5-4(4)

The defending champions are looking ominously good over on Louis Armstrong...

Swiatek/Ruud 4-1 4-2 McNally/Musetti

19:31 , Oli Gent

Game, set, and match! Ruud to serve it out, and he starts as he means to go on by lasering a forehand line winner before McNally can even see it.

Musetti does well against the barrage as Swiatek deflects one high and long for 15-15, and Ruud misses the smash after a high-octane net exchange! 15-30.

Ruud changes angle and surprises Musetti with a forehand into his feet, which the Italian can’t adjust to in time, and they’re two points from victory at 30-30.

Musetti looks to slice a backhand and gets it all wrong, and it’s match point.

Ruud does the honours, sending down a tricky second serve down the T that has McNally scrambling, and he and Swiatek are into the last four!

Swiatek/Ruud 4-1 3-2 McNally/Musetti

19:27 , Oli Gent

Break! That’s lovely feel from McNally at the net to complement the Musetti serve as she hits a cushioned dropshot winner for 15-0. Ruud gets lucky with a net cord that forces Musetti to frame a backhand long, which levels proceedings.

The best rally of the match follows, with all players getting numerous hits, showing all aspects of their respective games. Ruud tries to go cross-court, and that forces McNally to guide it just long! Swiatek then does brilliantly to find the angle of her backhand, and that is a superb inside-out winner for two break points.

She loses the first as she comes out second best in a baseline forehand exchange with Musetti, but there’s another chance here. Two in fact, with sudden-death deuce.

McNally saves the second, and she is really growing into this match at the net. Fantastic hands from her down low before a composed smash winner.

Ruud, however, has different ideas, and he loops a forehand winner out of nowhere as they in at the changeover up a set and a break, and a game away from the semis!

Swiatek/Ruud 4-1 2-2 McNally/Musetti

19:20 , Oli Gent

Swiatek with ball in hand now, and after an astounding rally that includes all four players, Swiatek finds that extra gear with a sublime topspin forehand winner that Musetti just cannot get to.

McNally is like a wall at the net as she keeps repelling everything that is fired at her, but Ruud catches her out with a lob to go up 30-0. Musetti blazes a forehand long with the game slipping away, but Swiatek makes a mistake looking for the line off the backhand, and Musetti takes full advantage. 40-15, but this time, a solid serve and Ruud volley is enough to draw them level on the scoreboard.

Swiatek/Ruud 4-1 1-2 McNally/Musetti

19:16 , Oli Gent

McNally double faults to start off her service game, but Musetti bails her out with some nimble footwork across the net to divert a Swiatek pass for a winner. 15-15, and the Italian shows his touch once more to catch out Ruud and put them up 30-15.

Swiatek, however, shows her aptitude off both wings as she fires a huge backhand winner cross-court to keep the heat on at 30-30, but she gets another all wrong to concede game point.

McNally and Musetti take the hold as chaos ensues at the net, and Swiatek is the first to blink as she skews a backhand half-volley into the net!

Swiatek/Ruud 4-1 1-1 McNally/Musetti

19:12 , Oli Gent

That’s a beautiful return winner from Musetti to punish another slow Ruud second serve, but McNally misses her own return to level. Musetti then digs his partner into a hole, trying to lob Swiatek, but the Pole is up to it and smashes it away for a winner.

Ruud double faults, uncharacteristically, and the pressure is on at 30-30. However, that is quickly averted as Musetti misjudges an attempted backhand return up the line, and it’s game point. Ruud duly delivers, after both Swiatek and Musetti show great hands at the net, but the Norwegian, on the approach, slaps it for a winner to close out the hold.

Swiatek/Ruud 4-1 0-1 McNally/Musetti

19:08 , Oli Gent

Musetti on serve to start the second. Swiatek does superbly to hold her own in the baseline exchange, and McNally makes it interesting with a strong volley, but that is absolutely sublime from Musetti, quickly changing direction to catch Ruud out down the line with a humdinger of a topspin forehand winner! He can’t repeat his heroics with an attempted lob which lands just long for 15-15, but he quickly makes amends as he aces Swiatek out wide. Musetti and Ruud really go hammer and tongs on the power with their exchange from the back of the court, but Ruud wins out as Musetti nets an attempted forehand dropshot. 30-30, and a double fault from the Italian leaves him a break point down, serving to Ruud, who is in a hot streak of form. He goes big with the first delivery, just missing out wide, before switching it up and going for the T. Ruud misses the forehand as he steps inside the baseline, and we go to sudden-death deuce once more. Musetti does brilliantly as Ruud overcommits with the net approach, and the Italian drills a sumptuous one-handed backhand winner cross-court to take the game.

Swiatek/Ruud 4-1 McNally/Musetti

19:01 , Oli Gent

Set! Musetti opens up his shoulders to punish a slow Ruud second serve for 0-15, and he then follows up with a delicate dropshot to turn up the heat. 0-30, but Ruud batters down not one but two thunderous forehands to halve the deficit. He’s really gunning for McNally off his forehand, and while the American does really well to get down to deflect one back, she can’t quite get enough on the next. 30-30, and Ruud’s second serve is returned well by Musetti, before Swiatek takes over to spank a forehand putaway into the stands. Set point, which they duly take as Musetti blows a volley wide! One set up in just 16 minutes!

Swiatek/Ruud 3-1 McNally/Musetti

18:58 , Oli Gent

Break! McNally is up on the baseline as the last of the four to serve. She goes to the Swiatek backhand, and the Wimbledon champion nets the return. Ruud sends his return short and catches out the American to level proceedings, and the Norwegian shows his power off both wings as he crashes a forehand and a backhand as he gets aggressive. Musetti and McNally both do well to get them back, but the Italian can only palm another into the net. A strong McNally serve gets it back to 30-30, before Ruud shows his athleticism at the net with a stooping forehand volley winner to tee up break point. His brute force off the forehand is just too much for McNally to handle, and Swiatek and Ruud take the first break.

Swiatek/Ruud 2-1 McNally/Musetti

18:53 , Oli Gent

Swiatek’s turn to serve, and she gets off to a good start as Musetti goes for the forehand dropshot, but he misses the tramlines by a whisker. Swiatek and McNally engage in a bruising baseline battle, before Musetti steps across to cut the rally short with a backhand volley putaway. Musetti nets his return for 30-15, and the Italian and American pair keep the pressure on with super play between the pair of them during a brilliant rally. Musetti smashes it out of the court for 30-30, and they have a break point as Swiatek goes for the audacious forehand line winner, but the ball just misses. Break point, which they spurn as Musetti just misses with an acrobatic, flicked backhand volley! To sudden-death deuce we go, and Swiatek holds with a strong serve as McNally overdoes the return.

Swiatek/Ruud 1-1 McNally/Musetti

18:48 , Oli Gent

Musetti with the ball in hand now. He serves to Swiatek first, and the Pole gets the ball back, but she overcooks a backhand on the baseline exchange as Musetti and McNally get on the board. A superb Musetti backhand down the line catches Swiatek out, and she can’t quite keep the forehand return in play from a wide delivery from the Italian. 40-0, as Musetti closes out the love-hold with an ace down the T.

Swiatek/Ruud 1-0 McNally/Musetti

18:46 , Oli Gent

The second round gets underway with Ruud on serve, and he takes the first point as Musetti slices a backhand into the net. A McNally return to the serve wide into the backhand corner is also netted for a 30-0 lead, and the Norwegian is finding all the angles off his delivery as another serve into the corner of the box makes Musetti miss another return. He aces McNally for some hold to love!

Here come the two pairs!

18:38 , Oli Gent

Swiatek and Ruud walk back onto Arthur Ashe, following McNally and Musetti onto court.

The Pole and the Norwegian have their bags on their backs, having just played on that exact same court. A bit overkill, surely?

Sinner out of mixed doubles!

18:30 , Oli Gent

Men’s world No1 Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the tournament last minute after he retired with illness during the Cincinnati Open final yesterday.

The Italian had been supposed to play with doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova, but that pair have now been replaced by American duo Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison.
