US Open live: Boulter crashes out in first round, Alcaraz leaves rival stunned, Djokovic admits to ‘concern’

Katie Boulter suffered the first loss for a British player at the US Open as she fell in straight sets to the 27th seed, Marta Kostyuk, losing 6-4 6-4 as her tricky summer continues.

Also on Tuesday, Sonay Kartal faces the 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia looking to join Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper in the second round.

Carlos Alcaraz cruised past the challenge of big-serving Reilly Opelka to being his US Open campaign but all the talk afterwards was of his new haircut, with the Spaniard admitting the new-look was a mistake. Alcaraz laughed off comments from a stunned Frances Tiafoe, who called the buzz-cut “horrendous”.

Novak Djokovic will return to action tomorrow after admitting that he was concerned by his physical difficulties during his first-round win over Learner Tien. The 38-year-old struggled in the long rallies and took a medical timeout for treatment on the painful blisters on his foot.

Elsewhere, the shock of the US Open so far has been the exit of Australian Open champion and sixth seed Madison Keys, while Daniil Medvedev’s meltdown during his wild defeat to Benjamin Bonzi has sparked concern among fellow and former players.

Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter exit US Open in first round

19:03 , Mike Jones

Sonay Kartal limped to defeat in an extraordinary opening-round clash with Beatriz Haddad Maia at the US Open.

Kartal was making her debut in the main draw in New York following her speedy rise up the rankings and was looking to write more grand slam headlines following a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon.

She beat Haddad Maia earlier this season in Indian Wells but, inspired by her noisy Brazilian fan club, the 18th seed overcame cramp to claim a 6-3 1-6 6-1 victory.

Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter exit US Open in first round

Haddad Maia defeats Kartal in US Open first round!

18:25 , Mike Jones

There it is!

A wonderfully brilliant match comes to a close with Sonay Kartal beaten in three sets by Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Both players were suffering with injuries and issues and both gave everything to get over the line.

Kartal fought back from losing the first set to take the second before Haddad Maia, the No.18 seed, dug into her reserves and managed to see it through.

Both Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal have been beaten in the first round here.

Haddad Maia restores double break

18:19 , Mike Jones

An incredible end to the game, which goes through five deuces, sees Haddad Maia take the game away from Kartal.

The Brazilian is fist pumping after every point, keeping herself motivated and looking to push through to the end of the match.

She’s now serving to win the set and advance to the next round.

Haddad Maia struggles through

18:16 , Mike Jones

The Brazilian is hobbling around but is determined to see this one through.

She moves 15-40 up against the serve of Kartal and has two chances to close out the game.

A fizzing serve for the Brit saves the first break point. Kartal’s impressive, and fiery, forehand saves the next one.

Deuce.

Haddad Maia pulls up

18:08 , Flo Clifford

Amazingly, now both players are struggling, as the Brazilian appears to have pulled something in her leg chasing down a ball. The heat out here is probably not helping the players either.

Kartal goes double break down

18:05 , Flo Clifford

Bad to worse for Kartal, who is not moving well at all now.

She goes a double break down, this time to love.

Kartal forces decider but falls early break down

18:00 , Flo Clifford

Over on Court 12, Sonay Kartal battled back to level things at 3-6 6-1 against 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, but looks to be potentially suffering with cramp or an issue in her calf in the early stages of the decider.

The British No 3 is down 3-0 and a break in the third set.

Elsewhere, Wimbledon and Cincinnati champion has continued her fine run of form with a straightforward 6-1 6-2 win over Emiliana Arango.

Katie Boulter first Brit out of US Open

17:54 , Flo Clifford

As for Boulter, her difficult summer continues. She had chances in that match but was a little too tentative for most of it, finding some of her trademark fight to save five match points, but going from 0-40 up with Kostyuk serving for the match to losing the last five points will really hurt.

She’s the first Brit knocked out in New York. The stats say it all: zero aces, eight double faults, and 10 winners for Boulter, compared to nine aces for Kostyuk and 19 winners.

Kostyuk, the only seed left in this section of the draw, will play Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey next.

Marta Kostyuk books spot in second round

17:51 , Flo Clifford

“Thank you guys for your support, I think it’s my first ever win on this court, I was always losing!” Kostyuk says on-court. “I really felt like one of the match points I got her, when I missed my drive volley it was a hard one.

“She was on a roll [in the final game] and I really didn’t want to reset the set from 5-all, so really glad I could close it at 6-4.

She jokes that she has to work with her fitness coach on her running as the interviewer rolls back the clip of her doing the splits to chase down a ball that she couldn’t get back over the net. “We are always there for each other in difficult times, and for me this is much more valuable than anything I could ever achieve,” she says of her team.

She asks a member of her team to lift up her extremely cute dog in the air, trophy-style - “he’s our biggest trophy for sure,” she says.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Katie Boulter 4-6, 4-6 Marta Kostyuk

17:47 , Flo Clifford

The 27th seed hammers down a succession of volleys and books her spot in the second round with a venomous volley at the net! She taps her temple towards her box. What composure, winning the last five points to seal it in straight sets.

The pair share a nice hug at the net. Boulter looks rueful as she waves to the crowd before heading off. She fought, but Kostyuk just withstood the pressure moments better today. Those three break points might haunt the Brit a bit tonight.

MATCH POINT! Katie Boulter 4-6, 4-5 Marta Kostyuk*

17:45 , Flo Clifford

Boulter hits long and Kostyuk has a sixth match point, this time on her own serve.

Katie Boulter 4-6, 4-5 Marta Kostyuk*

17:45 , Flo Clifford

So, having seen five match points go begging, Kostyuk will now try to serve this one out. How are the nerves?

A double fault would suggest they’re not great... and despite having a few chances to kill off the next rally, she can’t! Boulter digs in and Kostyuk sprays the ball wide for 0-30!

The Ukrainian can’t get to a low ball that just drops over the net, and Boulter has three break points...

One is neutralised as she knocks it into the net. Another, as a sharply-angled return goes narrowly wide. And the third with a brave serve! Deuce.

Boulter has Kostyuk at full stretch and the Ukrainian nets... and she has no reply for a brilliant serve! Five match points saved and Boulter takes the game!

*Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:39 , Flo Clifford

How on earth has Kostyuk not won this already? Boulter flings every ball back at her, the Ukrainian has plenty of time, but slams a high ball tamely into the net.

Deuce.

MATCH POINT! *Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:38 , Flo Clifford

Into the net again! Deuce once more. “Why!?” the Ukrainian says, half to herself and half to her box.

Much better, she closes down the net and hammers away into the open court. A fifth try.

MATCH POINT! *Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:37 , Flo Clifford

Into the net goes Kostyuk. Deuce again.

The previous two points really summed up this match for Boulter so far: a fine display to keep herself in it, with all the hard work unravelling with a double fault. The serve just hasn’t been good enough.

She hits into the net and Kostyuk has a fourth chance to close this out.

MATCH POINT! *Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:36 , Flo Clifford

Another double fault at the worst possible time. Another match point for Kostyuk.

Deuce! *Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:36 , Flo Clifford

And the second is saved with some fine, aggressive play by Boulter, a swinging volley one ball too many for Kostyuk despite some dogged defence. Deuce.

MATCH POINT! *Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:35 , Flo Clifford

One goes begging as a Kostyuk backhand goes uncharacteristically long, a bad miss.

*Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:35 , Flo Clifford

Long from Boulter. Kostyuk can see the finish line.

Boulter has only won 46% of her first serves in this set, compared to 74% in the first and 73% for Kostyuk in this set.

She reacts to another error by half-heartedly throwing her racquet on the ground a couple of times.

Much better as she comes to the net and wallops away the ball with real venom, roaring “Come on!”

Still a mountain to climb at 15-30... and a double fault, her seventh, hands Kostyuk two match points.

*Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-5 Marta Kostyuk

17:32 , Flo Clifford

Kostyuk shouts at herself for failing to close down a shot down the line but responds with a powerful ace down the T.

She holds to 15 to put herself one game away from the second round. Boulter must serve to keep herself in this.

Katie Boulter 4-6, 3-4 Marta Kostyuk*

17:28 , Flo Clifford

Much better from Boulter, rattling to 40-0 before she gets unlucky with a net cord, the ball dribbling over and landing outside the tramlines.

She blasts down a second serve and Kostyuk nets. Still in this.

*Katie Boulter 4-6, 2-4 Marta Kostyuk

17:26 , Flo Clifford

Kostyuk steps up a gear now, keen to get this over with. She’s dealt with some wrist and arm issues this season but doesn’t appear to be troubled at all today.

A sublime passing shot down the line wraps up a hold to 15 for the 27th seed.

Katie Boulter 4-6, 2-3 Marta Kostyuk*

17:22 , Flo Clifford

A speedy hold to love is exactly what Boulter needs at this point, and that’ll help her confidence at a fairly crucial stage in this set.

*Katie Boulter 4-6, 1-3 Marta Kostyuk

17:20 , Flo Clifford

There’s a bit of confusion as Boulter’s service return clips the top of the net post perfectly before bounding back up and onto Kostyuk’s side of the net. “Does that count?” the players both seem unsure. No, Kostyuk wins the point.

Kostyuk seals a much more straightforward service game with a fine one-two, planting the ball into the corner.

The camera pans to the Ukrainian’s frankly adorable dog, sitting in the crowd with her entourage. It travels with her on tour and came out on court after a win earlier this year - at the Madrid Open if memory serves me right.

BREAK! Katie Boulter 4-6, 1-2 Marta Kostyuk*

17:14 , Flo Clifford

“Come on Katie,” the crowd urges the Brit as she falls 0-30 down, spraying a forehand wide.

Bit of a reprieve as Kostyuk thumps into the net.

And a really gutsy second serve, straight down the T, for 30-30!

Another fine serve and an aggressive reply, moving up the court, sends Kostyuk the wrong way. She tries a similar tactic again but with less conviction and the 27th seed slams a winner into the open space down the line for deuce.

A double fault gives Kostyuk a shot at a third break in succession... and Boulter hits long.

BREAK BACK! *Katie Boulter 4-6, 1-1 Marta Kostyuk

17:08 , Flo Clifford

Boulter creeps to 0-30 but a seventh ace gets Kostyuk back in this... and Boulter plays the next rally brilliantly, manoeuvring her opponent around the court, the 27th seed fires long, and Boulter has the chance to break back!

Ohh, very unlucky, a fine rally but Boulter’s attempt to go down the line just clips the net.

Another awkward ball and that could be a major missed opportunity as Kostyuk fights back to deuce. Boulter is keeping her head up here but the errors are not helping.

Another chance as Kostyuk nets... and double faults to hand over the break!

(AP)

BREAK! Katie Boulter 4-6, 0-1 Marta Kostyuk*

17:02 , Flo Clifford

Nice positive start by Boulter to this set, taking the ball early and getting the better of Kostyuk in a quickfire net exchange, the Ukrainian just mistiming a return slightly and the ball skidding off her frame.

But Boulter goes long on her first game point and is a little tentative with the drop shot, which Kostyuk punishes with glee for deuce.

The 27th seed is on the front foot and a double fault hands over an early break. Boulter has it all to do here.

Sonay Kartal down a set

16:57 , Flo Clifford

Over on Court 12, Sonay Kartal has just lost the first set of her opener 6-3 to big-hitting Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, the 18th seed.

GAME AND FIRST SET! *Katie Boulter 4-6 Marta Kostyuk

16:55 , Flo Clifford

A booming, gutsy second serve gives Kostyuk another chance to close out the set, and Boulter fires long on another strong serve to seal it.

Both players had first serves won over 70%, but Boulter only won 25% of her second serves, and that’s the stat of the match so far.

(AP)

Katie Boulter 4-5 Marta Kostyuk*

16:53 , Flo Clifford

Boulter digs in in a lengthy baseline exchange, Kostyuk losing focus first and dumping into the net.

A big shout from Kostyuk, who is as fired up as ever, as she whacks down a fifth ace of the match.

That’s followed by another double fault. The Ukrainian has had a rather up and down year results-wise and her serving today has been much the same, you never quite know what you’re going to get.

Boulter gets unlucky with a net cord and it’s set point Kostyuk... but the Brit ends another long baseline rally with a delightful drop shot for deuce! Kostyuk tries desperately to get there and slides onto the tarmac, practically doing the splits. Ouch.

BREAK BACK! Katie Boulter 4-5 Marta Kostyuk*

16:47 , Flo Clifford

Kostyuk is undeterred by that sloppy service game and hammers the ball to go 0-30 up.

A fine serve gets Boulter back in this but Kostyuk continues to dictate and, with the Ukrainian imposing herself at the net, the Brit sends her passing shot wide for 15-40.

Oh no, a fourth double fault hands over the break, after all that hard work to break back. Now Kostyuk will serve for the set.

BREAK BACK! *Katie Boulter 4-4 Marta Kostyuk

16:44 , Flo Clifford

A fourth chance to break for Boulter as Kostyuk, trying to be aggressive at the net, volleys well long.

And she gets the break back, attacking a second serve, and the 27th seed sends the ball looping out of court!

All square.

Katie Boulter 3-4 Marta Kostyuk*

16:42 , Flo Clifford

Kostyuk serves a first double fault of her own, and an aggressive return by Boulter gives her an opening at 0-30. The Brit is looking positive out on court - and another double fault puts her 0-40 up!

The first chance goes begging as she puts too much oomph on a second serve return.

An ace drags Kostyuk back to 30-40.

Ooh, Boulter sets herself up perfectly but as she closes down the net a forehand drags wide for deuce!

Katie Boulter 3-4 Marta Kostyuk*

16:38 , Flo Clifford

A spot of bother for Boulter as she produces back-to-back double faults.

A nice change of direction, with a fearsome passing shot down the line, is too much even for Kostyuk, one of the quickest movrs out there.

The 27th seed shouts at herself in frustration as her ball lands just long.

“Come on!” Boulter shouts in reply as the Ukrainian produces another error and she seals the hold.

*Katie Boulter 2-4 Marta Kostyuk

16:34 , Flo Clifford

Boulter tries something different, moving up the court, but Kostyuk is equal to it and the Brit ultimately catches a high ball with a bit too much pace, blasting long.

Another overhit by Boulter and Kostyuk holds to 15.

Katie Boulter 2-3 Marta Kostyuk*

16:30 , Flo Clifford

Some clever serving by Boulter, into the body of her opponent, throws Kostyuk off balance, and she holds to love in return. Just the one break deficit at this point.

*Katie Boulter 1-3 Marta Kostyuk

16:28 , Flo Clifford

After a couple of long service games Kostyuk holds to love in the blink of an eye, Boulter getting unlucky with a return down the line that just drifts wide.

BREAK! Katie Boulter 1-2 Marta Kostyuk*

16:26 , Flo Clifford

Oh dear. First blood Kostyuk as Boulter thumps into the net.

The 27th seed complains to the umpire about what sounds like the crowd, who ‘oohed’ at one point in that game but are hardly raucous.

*Katie Boulter 1-1 Marta Kostyuk

16:24 , Flo Clifford

Kostyuk illustrates just why she’s so dangerous with some creative angles and easy power, but a laser-sharp cross-court forehand gets Boulter back in for 30-30.

The longest rally of the match so far, 13 shots, goes Boulter’s way as the Ukrainian skies the ball out of court.

But a backhand long takes us to deuce... and just after Boulter puts herself into a position to win it, a double fault puts us back to deuce.

Kostyuk fist pumps and shouts to herself as she whips a forehand down the line for an early break point chance.

*Katie Boulter 1-1 Marta Kostyuk

16:18 , Flo Clifford

A couple of wayward shots by Kostyuk let Boulter into this game.

“Come on!” the 27th seed shouts as Boulter hits long, but she takes another return too short and is dragged to deuce. A few early errors from the Ukrainian as she settles in.

A booming first serve... but back to deuce as Kostyuk, closing down the net, overhits again.

She’s made to work for it, but gets the hold.

Katie Boulter 1-0 Marta Kostyuk*

16:13 , Flo Clifford

Katie Boulter serves first. Kostyuk pounces on a fairly tame second serve and Boulter nets.

The Ukrainian fights doggedly in the next rally - this could be a real physical contest - but ultimately fires long.

A wayward backhand hants Boulter a cheap free point, and some strong serving helps her to a hold to 30. A confidence-boosting early hold.

Katie Boulter v Marta Kostyuk

16:08 , Flo Clifford

These two are in the same quarter as sixth seed Madison Keys, who of course was knocked out in the first round in a real upset yesterday.

That has significantly opened up this section of the draw. The winner of this match will face Zeynep Somnez in the next round.

Boulter won her only previous meeting with Kostyuk, but the Ukrainian is the 27th seed here so this should be a real battle.

The players are out on Grandstand on what looks like a hot, sunny day in New York. The stands are sparsely populated at the moment but will hopefully fill up as this progresses.

Katie Boulter back in positive frame of mind after hectic summer schedule

15:49 , Jamie Braidwood

Katie Boulter is feeling like herself again after attributing a difficult summer to overwork.

The 29-year-old lost four matches in a row for the first time in four-and-a-half years before stopping the rot in Cleveland earlier this week.

Boulter pulled off one of the best wins of her career in the first round of Wimbledon against Paula Badosa but crashed out in round two to lucky loser Solana Sierra and went on to lose her opening matches at the WTA events in Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati.

She cited a hectic schedule over the past couple of years, including prioritising representing Britain at the Olympics and in the Billie Jean King Cup, for her struggles.

Who is Janice Tjen? Emma Raducanu’s next opponent carries red-hot form into US Open

15:39 , Jamie Braidwood

Emma Raducanu’s incredible 2021 run to the US Open title helped inspire her next opponent to believe a career in the professional game was possible.

Watching from Pepperdine University in California was sociology student Janice Tjen, who on Sunday became the first Indonesian player for more than 20 years to win a grand slam singles match.

Tjen’s victory over 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova was one of the most surprisingly results of the tournament so far on paper, but a closer look at the 23-year-old’s trajectory makes it somewhat less shocking.

Andrey Rublev offers support to close friend Daniil Medvedev after US Open outburst: ‘He has me’

15:29 , Jamie Braidwood

Andrey Rublev has offered his support to close friend Daniil Medvedev after the former US Open champion had an extraordinary meltdown during his first-round defeat at Flushing Meadows.

Six-time grand slam champion Boris Becker suggested he needed “professional help”, while Rublev - a close friend of Medvedev and godfather to his children - said his compatriot had a support network to turn to.

“If he wants to change and needs help he has me, a lot of other friends and family that will help him,” the 15th seed said.

“But it’s his life and his decision what he needs to do. Only he knows what is happening.

“I think he needs to take some time because it was a tough loss for him, but I will text him. The year he’s had in the slams has not been easy for him.”

Madison Keys admits to ‘paralysing’ nerves after crashing out of US Open

15:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Australian Open champion Madison Keys became the first big casualty of the US Open as she crashed to an opening-round loss in New York.

The sixth seed, who reached the final at Flushing Meadows eight years ago, hit 89 unforced errors in a 6-7 (10) 7-6 (3) 7-5 defeat by Mexico’s Renata Zarazua.

“I feel like today, for the first time in a while, my nerves really got the better of me, and it kind of became a little bit paralysing,” said Keys.

“I want to win, but just feeling like winning matters just way too much, and I just couldn’t quite separate myself from that. Then once you start playing badly, it just kind of all snowballs.”

Jack Draper shows ring rust on injury return as he reaches US Open second round

15:09 , Jamie Braidwood

A rusty Jack Draper vomited again at the US Open but battled through to the second round on his return from injury.

The world number five was playing his first match since a shock loss to Marin Cilic at Wimbledon more than seven weeks ago, after which he was diagnosed with bone bruising in his left arm and forced to take time away from the court.

He eventually came through in four sets against 203rd-ranked Argentinian qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez, wrapping up a 6-4 7-5 6-7 (7) 6-2 victory after one minute over three hours.

Venus Williams proud of her US Open performance

14:59 , Jamie Braidwood

The 45-year-old said: “I just haven’t played a lot of matches, so I’m still finding everything. I didn’t win today, but I’m very proud of how I played.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a crowd that much on my side. I knew going into this match that people in this stadium, people in the United States, people around the world, were really rooting for me, and that felt great.

“I think for me getting back on the court was about giving myself a chance to play more healthy.

“When you play unhealthy, it’s in your mind. It’s not just how you feel. You get stuck in your mind, too. So, it was nice to be freer.”

Emotional Venus Williams, 45, falls short of remarkable victory on US Open return

14:49 , Jamie Braidwood

Venus Williams fell short of a remarkable US Open victory, but not before showing the tennis world why she is not ready to hang up her racket just yet.

At 45, Williams was the oldest player to compete in the women’s singles here since Renee Richards in 1981 and the third oldest of the open era.

She had a tough draw against 11th seed Karolina Muchova, a semi-finalist last year, but made life very uncomfortable for the Czech before eventually falling to a 6-3 2-6 6-1 defeat.

Whether this was Williams’ last run-out remains to be seen and she waved to all sides of Arthur Ashe Stadium as she walked off to a standing ovation.

Novak Djokovic admits physical ‘concern’ after struggling to first-round US Open win

14:42 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic will return to action tomorrow - where he plays 22-year-old American qualifier Zachary Svadja - and the 38-year-old will hope for a more comfortable match than his opening win over Learner Tien.

Djokovic struggled with the long rallies and admitted afterwards that he was concerned by how he was feeling physically.

“I started great,” said the seventh seed. “Just over 20 minutes, first set, I felt really good. Then some long games to start the second set, and then I started to feel really (bad) – I don’t know why. I really was surprised how bad I was feeling in the second physically.

“We had long exchanges, but also I dropped my level and made a lot of unforced errors and got him back into the match. I’m glad that I kind of reset myself after second set. And the third set was OK to finish up the match.

“Good thing, two days off now. But it’s slightly a concern. I don’t have any injury or anything. I just struggled a lot to stay in long exchanges and recover after points.”

In his press conference, Alcaraz revealed the real reason behind the cut, saying: “I felt like my hair was really long already, and before the tournament I just really wanted to get a haircut.

“My brother, he misunderstood with the machine. He just cut it. Then the only way to fix it is just shave it off. It’s not that bad, I guess.”

Carlos Alcaraz’s haircut rather than his tennis was the talk of the US Open as the second seed eased into round two in New York.

Alcaraz’s friend and rival Frances Tiafoe did not approve, though, with the American seen behind the scenes appraising the lack of locks.

“It’s definitely terrible,” said Tiafoe. “He’s my guy though. It’s funny, I looked at him and I was like, ‘I guess you’re aerodynamic’. I don’t know who told him that it’s good. I don’t know who told him to do that, but it’s terrible.”
