Most of the top seeds at the US Open progressed to the second week but there have still been some major shocks in the early rounds of the grand slam in New York.
Former US Open champion and third seed Coco Gauff has comprehensively beaten by Naomi Osaka in their highly anticipated fourth-round clash. Osaka won 6-3 6-2 and has gone on to win the tournament on all four previous occasions where she has reached a grand slam quarter-final.
Third seed Alexander Zverev became the biggest casualty on the men’s side after defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime, while British No 1 Jack Draper’s early withdrawal due to injury and top American Ben Shelton’s retirement from his third-round match were major blows to the tournament as a whole.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have shared the last seven grand slams between them and and would play a third grand slam final in a row if they meet this fortnight. Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is the top seed in the women’s draw, with Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek returning to second seed ahead of Coco Gauff.
