Tiger Woods really, really enjoyed Rafael Nadal's US Open win over Marin Cilic

There must be few better feelings as an athlete than receiving raucous support from the crowd when up against it. It must be even better, as Rafael Nadal found, when that support is coming from Tiger Woods.

Woods was a vocal champion of Nadal's on Monday evening as the world no.2 battled against Marin Cilic to reach the US Open quarter-finals.

Fist pumps, whooping, shouting, cheering, clapping... you name it, Woods did it.

Nadal faced his toughest test of the tournament so far against 2014 champions Cilic, winning 6-3 3-6 6-1 6-2 in New York to set up a clash with no.20 seed Diego Schwartzman.

Woods was there for the ride and rose to his feet, along with the rest inside Arthur Ashe, as Nadal saw off his opponent after two hours and 49 minutes on court.

"Just an incredible performance and awesome way to close out the match," Woods tweeted afterwards.

Nadal was asked about Woods during his on-court post-match interview.

"For me, it's a huge honor playing in front of all of you of course," Nadal said to the crowd. "But playing in front of Tiger for me is a very special thing.

"I always said I never had big idols, but if I had to say one, one idol is him. I always tried to follow him every single shot that he hit during the whole year.

"For me, it's a big pleasure to have him here supporting. Means a lot. He's a big legend of the sport, one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. I just want to congratulate him for one of the more amazing comebacks in sport, winning the Masters this year."
