Rafael Nadal has made it through to the quarter-finals after a vintage display against Marin Cilic, but defending women's singles champion Naomi Osaka is out after a shock straight-sets defeat by Belinda Bencic.
Diego Schwartzman eliminated sixth seed Alexander Zverev, while home favourite Taylor Townsend was beaten by Bianca Andreescu and Donna Vekic came through a decider against Julia Goerges.
There were also wins for Gael Monfils, Elise Mertens and Matteo Berrettini.
