US navy detonates huge 40,000lb bomb in the sea triggering earthquake 100 miles away

The US Navy has released a stunning video showing the moment a bomb exploded in the middle of the ocean before triggering an earthquake some 100 miles away.

The jaw-dropping footage shows the 40,000lb bomb exploding in "full ship shock trials" where they are testing the effects such a device has on Navy ships.

The explosion caused a 3.9 magnitude earthquake about 100 miles away in Daytona Beach, Florida, a phenomenon which is not unusual during similar trials.

The experimental explosion that happened on Friday isn't unusual either, the Daily Star reports.

It was carried out underwater, with a Navy ship being above water. The trials will show how durable the ship is to bombs and how effective they will be in battle.

The United States Geological Survey measured the seismic event roughly 100 miles off the coast of Ponce Inlet, a town just south of Daytona Beach.

The video, recorded from the wing of a US Navy aircraft carrier, has already been viewed almost 30,000 times on Twitter after being shared by @warship_78.

The explosion attracted unwanted attention despite the Navy saying it was completely safe. The bomb was detonated to the side of the aircraft carrier to imitate possible battle conditions it may face.

The video shows one of three planned detonations, although it is believed that the tests will be capped at two.

The naval ship's twitter account tweeted: "#Warship78 completes the 1st explosive event of Full Ship Shock Trials! The leadership and crew demonstrated #NavyReadiness fighting through the shock, proving our warship can 'take a hit.'"

Before the tests on Friday, the most recent shock trial had been back in 2016, again off the coast of Florida.

The US Navy said in a statement: "Ford’s shock trials are being conducted off the East Coast of the United States, within a narrow schedule that complies with environmental mitigation requirements, respecting known migration patterns of marine life in the test area."
