A nanny in the US has been convicted of murder after she force-fed an eight-month-old baby because the child had disturbed her nap.

Oluremi Adeleye, 73, from Maryland, was found guilty on Monday of child abuse and second degree murder over Enita Salubi’s death in 2016.

“You left home with a live baby and came home with a dead baby,” Influence Salubi, said in court about the day his daughter died, the Washington Post reports. “It’s not something I can forget.”

Footage from a nanny camera showed Enita pulling on the nanny’s dress and patting her leg as she lay on the couch.

Prosecutors said that Adeleye then poured nearly eight ounces (0.25 litres) of milk down Enita’s throat in less than 30 seconds.

The footage showed Adeleye picked up Enita after she fell to the floor and tried to give her another bottle.

The baby eventually went limp.

Adeleye said she was trying to ensure the baby did not go hungry.

She testified that forcing babies to eat is common practice in Nigeria, where she is from, according to the Washington Post.

“I did what I needed to do to make sure the baby had food in the stomach,” she testified through an interpreter.
