Us movie spoilers: Jordan Peele explains why Jeremiah 11:11 holds meaning for Red

Us has everyone talking from the Easter eggs to the references.

The new horror movie from Get Out director Jordan Peele has been the source of much discussion, Us movie theories: Best and confirmed film fan theories from duality to Jason, but now we have a few more definitive answers from the man himself.

Speaking to Empire, the acclaimed director explained the importance of the much-referenced biblical reference to Jeremiah 11:11.

The Jeremiah 11:11 Biblical verse reads: "Therefore thus said the Lord, 'Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.'"

Peele told the publication that it relates to the leader of the Tethered, Red (Lupita Nyong'o).

"She’s had a vision, she's had a connection to what she calls God," said Peele. "I think one of the breakthroughs in the writing process was realising that the dynamic of the Tethered was cult.

"That they have a complete faith in their Messiah, that is Red. And to ultimately imply that them being the dark sides of us, we are in a cult as well. Just a less scary one on the surface."

The director also touched on why it took so long for the Tethered to rise up against their originals, and it's to do with Adelaide (also Nyong'o) returning to the beach where her childhood trauma took place.

"It’s a plan that's been in place for a long time, and a plan that was in place to ultimately coincide in one of this family's trips back to the area of her initial trauma."

Well, we just want to run back to cinemas and see it all over again!
