US media company cuts jobs and tells staff to take unpaid leave

The US media company Freedom Communications is instituting a series of job cuts and imposing other cost-saving measures at its flagship title, the California-based Orange County Register.

Staff received a memo yesterday jointly signed by the chief executive, Aaron Kushner, and president, Eric Spitz, in which they said it was necessary "to align our cost structure with what we now know we can achieve in revenue growth."

So there will be two-week furloughs (unpaid leaves of absence); voluntary redundancy packages; a restructure of the sales team; and changes to editions.
