US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had surgery on Friday to remove two malignant nodules from her left lung, a court spokeswoman said.
Doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York said she was "resting comfortably" after the surgery, and there was no evidence of any further disease.
The procedure comes a month after the 85-year-old Ginsburg broke three ribs in a fall. She was treated for colon cancer in 1999 and pancreatic cancer in 2009.
Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg is the high court's oldest justice and one of four liberals.
Ginsburg has repeatedly vowed to remain on the court as long as her health allows and her mind remains sharp.
If Ginsburg were unable to return to the court, President Donald Trump would likely move swiftly to replace her - most likely with another conservative, after October's confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
The spokeswoman said Ginsburg was quote "resting comfortably" after the surgery and would remain in the hospital for a few days.
