A "shield law" to help reporters protect confidential sources is expected to pass easily through the house of representatives this week despite opposition from the Bush administration, which believes it could be an obstacle to law enforcement. But the bill has attracted an unusual right-left coalition. News organisations have been pushing for a federal law to protect reporters' sources since a supreme court ruling in 1972 that the first amendment gives journalists no right to refuse to name them.
