The U.S. is warning travelers to the Philippines to be careful.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a travel advisory Tuesday to the Republic of the Philippines due to flight security issues at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
The airport, which serves the capital city of Manila and surrounding areas, is the main international gateway for travelers to the Southeast Asian country.
The airport "does not maintain and carry out effective security consistent with the security standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization," Homeland Security stated in a release. "This determination was based on assessments by a team of security experts from the Transportation Security Administration."
Effective immediately, Homeland Security is directing airlines issuing tickets for travel between the U.S. and Ninoy Aquino to notify passengers in writing of the finding. The advisory must also be displayed prominently at all U.S. airports that provide regular service to Ninoy Aquino.
TSA representatives have been working with the Philippine government to help airport and transportation authorities bring Ninoy Aquino up to international security standards, and will continue to help them fix the problems and assess security measures.
