US-Israeli ‘drug smuggler’ Naama Issachar freed from prison after Vladimir Putin pardon

A US-Israeli woman sentenced to more than seven years in prison was freed today after receiving a pardon from President Vladimir Putin.

Naama Issachar, 26, was arrested in Moscow in April 2019 after more than nine grams of marijuana were found in her luggage and jailed for drug smuggling.

Her release came ahead of talks in Moscow between Mr Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who flew in from Washington to discuss US President Donald Trump’s Israeli-Palestinian peace plan.

Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot reported that Issachar would return on Mr Netanyahu’s plane following today’s meeting.

Reacting to the pardon, her mother Yaffa Issachar told Israeli media: “Finally, thank God, thanks to everyone.”
