US investor Robert Platek, who eyed Sunderland takeover sets sights on Serie A side

American investor Robert Platek has set his sights on a takeover at Serie A side Spezia Calcio.

He was one of three investors who plotted a takeover at Sunderland in Autumn 2019 - joining forces with John Phelan and Glenn Fuhrmann as part of FPP Sunderland.

The talks with Stewart Donald saw Madrox partners take out a £10million loan with MSD Holdings - with another group who has links to the trio agreeing similar financial agreements with Premier League side Southampton and Championship Derby County..

The group has come under increased scrutiny for their lending in football with high rates of interest.

Nonetheless, Platek has plans to establish a multi-club ownership model in Europe.

He purchased Danish top flight side Sønderjysk Elitesport last year and has interests in Portuguese second division side Casa Apia, according to Calcio Finanza.

Platek has agreed a €22million deal to takeover at Spezia after originally plotting a move for Udinese. Italian national media is reporting that the fee could be reduced if Spezia were to get relegated this season.

The black-and-whites won promotion to Italy’s top flight last season and are just outside the relegation places.

Reports also suggest that Platek is interested in purchasing a club in Belgium to grow his assists further.
