US holidaymakers warned not to travel to the UK even if fully vaccinated

US holidaymakers have been warned to not travel to the UK due to surging Coronavirus cases.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention placed the UK on the highest level of the United States travel guidance yesterday - warning that even fully-vaccinated travellers could be at risk.

The decision was made on the day that Boris Johnson entered the country into step four of the Covid recovery roadmap when he lifted the remaining social contact restrictions and re-opened nightclubs.

The UK was categorised as "Level 4 Very High" - which means that Americans were urged to "avoid travel to the United Kingdom" and to make sure they are fully vaccinated if travel is essential.

The guidance said: "Because of the current situation in the United Kingdom, even fully vaccinated travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19 variants."

Government data has shown that the the UK has recorded 39,950 new COVID cases and 19 more coronavirus-related deaths in the latest 24-hour period.

The country joins nations including Brazil, South Africa and the Netherlands on Level 4.

India, Iran and Italy are among the nations that have been badly hit by coronavirus but are a level lower on the US's travel guidance.
