US gas prices jump again as drivers endure worst pain at the pump in years

  • Gas prices have jumped again with AAA reporting a national average of $3.88 per gallon for regular fuel and $5.09 for diesel Thursday.
  • The prices hit $3.84 and $5.06 Wednesday, a significant increase since the Iran war began and the highest price in the U.S. in two and a half years. Consumers were paying $2.98 per gallon before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28.
  • This surge is attributed to the Iran war’s impact on global oil flows, leading to soaring crude oil prices, with Brent crude hitting $115 a barrel after Iran attacked energy facilities Wednesday as retaliation for an attack on its own massive gas field.
  • The US administration is implementing measures such as releasing oil from emergency stockpiles, easing sanctions on Venezuela and Russia, and waiving maritime shipping requirements to increase supply.
  • Despite these efforts, analysts caution that relief may be slow to reach consumers, with the ongoing war, seasonal fuel changes, and varying state taxes contributing to continued price volatility.
