US Election results 2020: Who won the popular vote?

After a nail-bitingly tense couple of days, it has now been confirmed that Joe Biden has won the US election.

With 290 electoral college votes, he has beaten Donald Trump and will be the next President of the United States.

It's a significant relief to the many, many people who were dreading another four years with Trump in the White House.

Biden won key swing states Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Pennsylvania- giving him well over the 270 requisite electoral college votes.

If he goes on to win Georgia, where he currently has a lead, he will end up with a total of 306.

But who won the most votes overall?

Who won the popular vote?

While there are still ballots to be counted, it looks almost certain that Biden will have won the popular vote as well as the electoral college.

He currently has a total of 74,478,345 votes, to Donald Trump's 70,329,970.

More people have voted for Biden than any other US presidential candidate in history (a record previously held by Barack Obama).

This reflects the historically high voter turnout this year. More than 102 million people cast their ballots prior to Election Day, with widespread mail-in and early voting.

And it's actually the second time that Donald Trump has lost the popular vote.

In 2016, 62,984,828 people voted for Trump - almost three million fewer than the 65,853,514 who voted for Hillary Clinton.

But Trump won the election because of the electoral college system, whereby states each have a different number of votes to award.
