That triggers a recess of the joint session, with senators and congressmen then going to their respective chambers to debate before reconvening.

And what will be the effect of the outgoing president showing up at a "stop the steal" rally in the US capital earlier when there is no fact-based evidence of mass fraud at the polls?
It certainly did not convince voters in Georgia, who in a Senate runoff look likely to unseat both Republican incumbents. So is it just a bit of bravado or will there be lasting consequences for democracy in the world's most powerful nation?
