US Election candidate's brutal debate takedown compared to 'The West Wing'

Few in the UK will have heard of Republican Senator David Perdue and his Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff.

But the bitter race for the Georgia Senate seat went viral last night, Ossoff's TV debate performance being compared to The West Wing by some viewers.

Ossoff branded sitting Senator Purdue a "crook" during the debate in Savannah, Georgia - and accused him of undermining Covid-19 scientists.

The split-screen clip shows Perdue looking rather sheepishly at the camera as he endures the bruising speech.

"Perhaps Senator Perdue would have been able to respond properly to the Covid-19 pandemic if you hadn’t been fending off multiple federal investigations for insider trading," Ossoff said - a reference to probes into Perdue's stock trades.

The Senator's campaign says he has been cleared of wrongdoing.

Ossoff went on: "It's not just that you're a crook, Senator. It's that you're attacking the health of the people you represent."

The Democrat accused his opponent of "looking after your own assets" while downplaying the risks of the virus.

Perdue responded by brandishing a document he said showed he had done business with a company in Hong Kong, linked to the Chinese Government.

But later in the debate, Ossoff noted that Perdue had released an attack ad in which the size of his nose had been enlarged "to remind everyone I was Jewish."

Ossoff is sitting seven points ahead of Perdue, according to a Citizen Data poll released today.
