US Election 2020: Joe Biden writes moving message of hope after visit to son's grave

Joe Biden scrawled a poignant message on the wall of his childhood home after visiting his son's grave on election day.

The US presidential candidate paid tribute to the late Beau Biden before he held a final rally in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The former Vice President toured his home town as voters cast ballots to decide his fate in his tense battle against President Donald Trump.

Biden launched his historic election day tour by attending mass at a church in Wimington, Delaware, where he then visited Beau's grave.

Granddaughter Finnegan put her arm around her granddad as they stopped for a moment at Beau's graveside.

The Biden entourage then made a pit-stop in Scranton.

There, Mr Biden scrawled the message "from this house to the White House with the grace of God" and signed his name and the Election Day date on the wall of his former childhood home.

He then travelled on to Philadelphia for a rally, where supporters cheered him on.

Speaking through a megaphone, Mr Biden initially mixed up his late son with his granddaughter.

With his arm wrapped around her, he addressed the crowd.

"This is my son, Beau Biden who a lot of you helped elect to the Senate in Delaware," he says in footage captured of the speech.

He then accidentally calls her by her sister Natalie's name.

"This is my granddaughter, Natalie,' he continues," before realising his mistake.

He then loops his arm around Natalie's shoulder, who was also standing close by, and corrects himself, saying: "This is Natalie, this is Beau's daughter."

Beau was an Iraq War veteran and Delaware attorney general who died of brain cancer at age 46, in 2015.

Mr Biden's first wife Neilia and their baby daughter Naomi, were killed in a car crash in 1972, and are buried at the same cemetery.

Millions of voters across the States on Tuesday filed out to cast their votes at libraries, schools, and other polling places on election day.

Results in the heated race are predicted to be slowed by the coronavirus pandemic, as many Americans heed social distancing and sheltering measures.

Ahead of Election Day, just over 100 million voters cast early ballots either by mail or in person, according to the US Elections Project at the University of Florida.

Some were declining to cast votes in person, driven by concerns over crowded polling places as Covid-19 continues its deadly surge.
