US election 2020 betting odds as Donald Trump and Joe Biden go head-to-head in the polls

The world is getting closer to finding out who whether Donald Trump will secure another four years in the White House.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden is currently bookmakers' favourite but that hasn't stopped a mystery British businessman reportedly betting $5m (£3.9m) on the re-election of Trump.

It is believed to be the biggest ever wager at a private bookmaker on the island of Curacao in the Caribbean.

Former Vice President Biden boasts a major poll lead with just hours to go and Betfair Exchange confirmed another bumper wager - of £1m - has been put down on the Democratic candidate.

While it is illegal to bet on the outcome of a Presidential election in the US, bookies elsewhere are still seeing bets come in for Trump thanks to attractive odds.

The businessman-turned-politician emerged against the odds in 2016 to beat Hilary Clinton, encouraging last minute flutters.

Ladbrokes' Jessica O'Reilly said: "Biden looks home and hosed according to the bookies and pollsters, but even at the eleventh hour punters are continuing to back Trump at the odds on offer."

Matthew Shaddick, head of political betting at British sports betting and gambling firm GVC, added: "It is twice as big as 2016, easily making it the biggest political event ever."

The majority of UK bookmakers' odds on Donald Trump retaining the presidency are currently shortening, while Joe Biden is going the other way.

But the Democratic candidate is still the favourite with most bookies.
