US Drone Crashes North of Baghdad

Photo of the US drone circulated on Iranian websites

An Iraqi official has confirmed that a US drone crashed this week in a farm northwest of the capital Baghdad near the international airport.

Iraqi sources and Iranian news agencies said this week that the unmanned combat aerial vehicle crashed in the district of Radwaniyah.

An informed Iraqi source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the drone, which was armed with missiles, crashed on Tuesday.

Asked whether it had come under attack, the source ruled it out, saying it likely crashed due to a technical malfunction.

The US-led coalition acknowledged on Friday that one of its drones made “an unscheduled landing” in Baghdad due to what it described as “a mechanical problem.”

“The aircraft landed safely and was successfully recovered by Iraqi Security Force troops. No one was injured and no property was damaged in the landing or recovery,” the coalition said in a statement.
