US diplomatic car kills motorcyclist in Pakistan, Ambassador summoned

One of the motorcyclists died while the other was injured

The US Ambassador to Pakistan has been summoned to explain a fatal car accident in which a diplomatic vehicle ran a red light and killed a motorcyclist.

CCTV footage shows the car driving through an intersection in Islamabad before hitting a motorbike carrying two passengers.

One of the motorcyclists, a 22-year-old student, died, while the other was injured.

Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday it had called in US Ambassador David Hale to lodge a complaint over "the tragic death of the motorcyclist and serious injury to the co-rider in the traffic accident yesterday that involved a US diplomat".

The father of the dead student has called for the driver of the diplomatic vehicle to be arrested and punished.

The US Embassy said it was cooperating with local police investigating the accident and expressed its sympathy towards the families of the riders.

Pakistan issued an official statement saying "justice will take its course in accordance with the law of the land and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961", suggesting it intends to adhere to the principle of diplomatic immunity.

About 12 people are killed each day on Pakistan's roads, but the number is lower in Islamabad, with two to three people killed in traffic accidents each week, according to Pakistan's Bureau of Statistics.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal tweeted about the incident, calling it a "tragic road accident involving US diplomat in which visibly traffic law was violated resulting in death of a Pakistan citizen".

In 2011, US-Pakistan relations were strained after a CIA contractor shot and killed two men on a motorbike from his car.

He claimed they were trying to rob him.

Pakistan refused to grant the contractor, Raymond Davis, diplomatic immunity, stating that he was not a diplomat.

Davis was charged with murder and faced court but was acquitted.
