US diplomat's wife Anne Sacoolas breaks silence over crash that killed teenage biker

The American woman who was driving the car that killed teen biker Harry Dunn has broken her silence over the incident after claiming diplomatic immunity in her home country.

Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a US diplomat, has admitted she was driving on the wrong side of the road when her car hit the 19-year-old.

A statement released by her lawyers said she was "terribly sorry" and "had no time to react" when she saw Harry approaching on his bike, the Mirror reports.

The teenager's family have urged Ms Sacoolas to return to the UK to face justice.

Speaking at a press conference on a visit to New York where she campaigned for Ms Sacoolas to return to the UK, Harry's mum Charlotte Charles, 44, said: “She must do the right thing to set an example to her children.

"You can’t run away after something this terrible.

“We shouldn’t be suffering like this. It should have been an open and shut case. The evidence is clear what happened.

“We’ve been told that there is CCTV evidence showing her on the wrong side of the road and you see Harry’s headlight of his motorbike and then there is a big fireball when his bike went up.”

The full statement from laywer Amy Jeffress of US legal firm Arnold & Porter reads: “Anne was driving on the wrong side of the road and is terribly, terribly sorry for that tragic mistake.

"She wants to meet the family to apologise and take responsibility. Anne had no time to react when she saw the motorbike.

“Anne stayed on the scene of the accident to assist. She spoke to Harry to tell him that she would call for help.

“She waved down another car. That driver offered to assist Harry so that Anne could comfort her young children in her car.”

Harry's family previously hit out at US President Donald Trump after he appeared to defend Ms Sacoolas' actions by saying wrong way driving "happens".

The crash happened in August near to RAF Croughton, Northants, where Ms Sacoolas' husband works.

She claimed she left the scene only when an ambulance arrived and left the UK around three weeks after the crash.
