US Democrat Seeks Assurances On F-15 Sale To Israel

The top US Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee is currently withholding approval for the sale of American-made F-15 fighter jets and related munitions to Israel. Rep. Gregory Meeks from New York expressed his concerns and stated that he is seeking assurances on how the weapons would be used before giving his consent.

As a prominent figure on the weapons-approving committee, Meeks holds significant influence over proposed weapons sales, effectively possessing a veto power. He emphasized the importance of understanding the types of weapons involved and their intended use, particularly in ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need and promoting a two-state solution.

Following Hamas' attack on Israel in October, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, the US has conducted more than 100 foreign military sales to Israel. While most of these sales did not require congressional notification due to falling below a specific dollar threshold, an $18 billion F-15 sale necessitated formal notification to Congress.

The administration informally notified the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations committees of the proposed F-15 sale in late January. Meeks highlighted his concerns about preventing further casualties and ensuring the safe delivery of aid, as well as advocating for the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Meeks' stance underscores the complex considerations involved in arms sales, balancing national security interests with humanitarian concerns and regional stability. The outcome of the classified briefings in Washington, DC, this week will likely shape the decision on the proposed F-15 sale to Israel.
