US Defense Secretary Mark Esper (L) met Kuwait's new Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah (R). (AFP)

US Secretary of State Mark Esper was in Kuwait on Sunday to offer his condolences over the death of Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah.

Esper met with new Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, who was sworn in last week.

Sheikh Nawaf also expressed concern over the health of US President Donald Trump.

The new emir said he was glad that Trump, who has been hospitalized after being diagnosed with coronavirus, was "recovering and well". Esper thanked him for his "expression of concern".

Kuwait and the United States are bound by a defense agreement that expires in 2022.
