US dairy recalls cheese amid deadly Listeria food poisoning outbreak

  • Clover Hill Dairy of Mechanicsville, Maryland, has recalled its requeson cheese after sampling identified Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause a serious form of food poisoning.
  • The recall is linked to an ongoing Listeria outbreak in the US, which has sickened at least eight people across Maryland, New York, and Virginia, resulting in one death and seven hospitalisations.
  • Sick individuals' samples were collected between March 6, 2023, and May 9, 2026, with two people reporting consumption of requeson made by Clover Hill Dairy.
  • The strain of Listeria found in the recalled requeson cheese matches the strain causing illnesses in two New York cases who purchased cheese from a retailer in Brentwood, Long Island.
  • Consumers are advised to immediately dispose of any affected products, identifiable by the manufacturer permit number '24-128,' and clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with the cheese, while the Maryland Department of Health has suspended Clover Hill Dairy’s operating license.
