US Consulate in Belfast 'likes' unflattering tweet about Donald Trump ahead of Joe Biden's inauguration

The US Consulate in Belfast's Twitter account 'liked' an unflattering tweet about President Donald Trump ahead of his successor Joe Biden's inauguration.

Its profile on the social media platform 'liked' a tweet posted on Monday by a US journalist reporting on the final months of Mr Trump's presidency.

The US Consulate said the Twitter message was liked "inadvertently".

It 'unliked' the message after being approached by Belfast Live.

The tweet described how Mr Trump swore and stormed out of the Oval Office in the White House after a disagreement with Attorney General William Barr over how to handle Black Lives Matter protests.

It read: "'No one gives me any f***ing support,' Trump yelled. He got up and stormed out of the Oval Office... leaving Barr and the others behind. Barr glanced over at a red-faced White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and joked, 'Well that went well.'"

Asked about the tweet, a US Consulate spokesman said: "An earlier social media thread was inadvertently liked and immediately rectified when the error was discovered."

President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration takes place on Wednesday.

Security is tight in Washington DC ahead of the ceremony, with thousands of National Guard reserve soldiers deployed.

It follows the storming of the Capitol building by supporters of Mr Trump on January 6 which led to five deaths.

Mr Trump is subsequently facing an impeachment trial, accused of "incitement of insurrection".
