Gen. Kurilla specifically pointed out the Islamic State group's Khorasan affiliates in Afghanistan and Syria as retaining the capability and intent to launch attacks, potentially within six months and with minimal warning. He emphasized that such attacks would likely target the U.S. and its European allies, necessitating significant resources to safeguard the U.S. homeland.
The recent attack on Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages, has exacerbated the situation, leading to retaliatory strikes by the U.S. in Iraq and Syria. Iran-backed militant groups in Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria have intensified their assaults, posing threats to maritime traffic in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, as well as targeting U.S. bases and troops across the region.
Despite U.S. responses, including strikes in Iraq and Syria and ongoing operations against the Houthis in Yemen, challenges persist. Gen. Kurilla acknowledged the diversion of intelligence assets from Afghanistan to other conflict zones for enhanced protection of troops and assets under attack.
While the Houthi rebels in Yemen continue their aggressive actions, Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria have been deterred temporarily. However, Iran's support for these groups persists, raising concerns about future instability in the region.
Gen. Kurilla stressed that the events of early October have created opportunities for malign actors to exploit and reshape the Middle East to Iran's advantage. Senators questioned the U.S. response to Iran, with calls for stronger actions against Iranian ships delivering support to militias.
Gen. Kurilla highlighted the complexity of deterring Iran, suggesting a multifaceted approach beyond military measures. He also mentioned the use of directed energy weapons to counter drone threats, emphasizing the need for additional resources to enhance defense capabilities.
