US Carries Out Strikes on Weapons Supply Routes in Iraq and Syria

U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt aircrafts fly during the U.S. led Saber Strike exercise in the air over Latvia

The recent strikes carried out by the United States on targets in Iraq and Syria have shed light on the locations and platforms used in the operation. The strikes targeted areas that had previously been struck by the US in November last year, as part of the weapons supply route by Iran's top military body, the IRGC.

The strategic locations hit in the recent strikes include Abu Kamal, located just across the border from Iraq into Syria on the Euphrates River. Further up the river, approximately 20 to 30 miles away, is Al-Mayadan, followed by Deir ez-Zor, also situated on the same major highway. These regions play a crucial role in the transportation of weapons along the major route from Iraq to Syria, particularly for large trucks.

It is important to note that Iran not only supplies weapons through Iraq to its proxies in Syria but also employs various routes that traverse Syria to reach its proxies like Hezbollah in Lebanon. As a result, these targeted areas may have served as storage sites for weapons and ammunition. However, due to the lack of real-time information, it remains uncertain whether any ammunition had been moved around prior to the strikes. The effectiveness of the strikes will be assessed in the coming days to determine the impact and potential adjustments needed.

Furthermore, the choice of platforms utilized in the airstrikes provides significant insights into the scale and intensity of the attack. While previous attacks in the region have predominantly involved F-15 and F-16 fighter jets, this recent operation saw the deployment of B-1 Lancer bombers. The B-1 bomber is one of the largest bombers in the US inventory, along with the B-2 and B-52. It possesses a significantly higher payload capacity than fighter jets, indicating a broader and more potent attack.

The use of multiple B-1 bombers signifies that the US sought to deliver a powerful and sustained response to the ongoing attacks by Iranian-backed militias against US forces. This aligns with the stated intentions of the Biden administration to confront and deter such aggression more forcefully compared to previous incidents. The use of the B-1 bombers showcases the US's commitment to executing a stronger military response when necessary.

In addition to the strikes in Iraq and Syria, F-18 fighter jets from the Navy targeted sites in Yemen. The choice of platforms, especially the B-1 bombers, reflects the intent of the US to send a clear message and demonstrate its capability to counter threats posed by Iranian-backed militias.

As more information becomes available, the effects of these strikes, any subsequent movements, and potential follow-up actions will be closely monitored. This operation signifies a shift in approach by the Biden administration and highlights the use of more powerful platforms to address destabilizing actions in the region.
