As the US woke up after a historic day, one in which the Capitol was stormed for the first time in 206 years, newspapers in the United States condemned the action of pro-Trump supporters in Washington DC.
Front pages across the country showed images of rioters scaling walls of the US Capitol Building, gunfire and violence.
Many major American newspapers said that a mob had “stormed” the Capitol. These included The Washington Post who went with the headline “Trump mob storms Capitol” and The Wall Street Journal who used the phrase “Mob storms Capitol” to describe events.
The New York Times also put the blame on Mr Trump with a headline that reads: “Trump incites mob.”
On the other side of America, the Los Angeles Times used similar wording on its front page saying: “Trump-incited mob storms US Capitol.”
Meanwhile in San Francisco, the San Francisco Chronicle summed up riots in just one word, “Insurrection.” The newspaper added: “As Democrats take the Senate, a violent mob encouraged by Trump storms the Capitol and delays certification of Biden’s victory.”
The New York Daily News also went for a single word headline: “Siege” and named the day as one that would go down in US history.
Even the conservative New York Post denounced riots as “Capitol invasion.” The paper went on to say that “guns were drawn to protect House from mob of Trump supporters.”
