US Capitol rioter who donned horned hat 'disappointed' Donald Trump didn't pardon him

A rioter who donned a horned hat as he stormed the US Capitol says he is disappointed the former President Trump did not pardon him.

Jacob Chansley, of Arizona, - nicknamed the "QAnon Shamon" - appeared in court and pleaded guilty to taking part in the unrest on January 6 this year.

During the riots, Chansley was pictured shirtless and wearing a horned headdress, showing off his tattoos.

He riled up the crowd with a bullhorn as officers tried to control them and referred to then-vice president Mike Pence as a traitor in the Senate.

He has been held without bond since his arrest shortly after the unrest and on Friday he entered a guilty plea to obstructing an official proceeding.

While he has been in detention, Chansley underwent psychological examinations and was diagnosed by prison officials with transient schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety.

He said it “wounded me so deeply and why it disappointed me so greatly that I and others did not get a pardon” from Trump.

Almost 600 people have been arrested over the riot at the Capitol where Congress was meeting to certify current President Joe Biden's victory.

A total of 50 others have pleaded guilty, mostly to misdemeanour charges of demonstrating in the Capitol.

Earlier, Donald Trump had given a fiery speech falsely claiming his defeat was the result of fraud.

The crime Chansley pleaded guilty to carried a maximum 20-year prison term and a $250,000 (£180,000) fine.

Prosecutor Kimberly Paschall indicated the maximum sentence the Government was likely to request would be much shorter.

Chansley had been a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory which casts Trump as a saviour figure and elite Democrats as a cabal of Satanist paedophiles and cannibals.

Although he did not get a pardon from Trump, Chansley's defence lawyer Albert Watkins said "there will always be a softspot" for Trump in Chansley's heart.

At Friday's plea hearing, Watkins asked Judge Royce Lamberth to allow Chansley to be released from prison pending a sentencing hearing, scheduled for November 17.

The judge said he would consider this request.

Watkins noted that prosecutors had acknowledged Chansley was "not a planner or organiser" of the riot.

He later told reporters that Chansley had cooperated with investigations on January 6 and informed on a group he saw stealing classified materials from a Senate office.
