US brewer names Glasgow Smile beer after the old 'No Mean City' reputation

An American brewer doesn't seem to have gotten the memo that Glasgow has shaken off its 'No Mean City' tag and reputation for violence to become a real cultural destination.

The company is brewing a beer named after the 'Glasgow Smile' - the wound caused by making a cut from the corners of a victim's mouth up to the ears to leave a scar in the shape of a smile.

The 6.70% IPA is produced by Nightmare Brewing Co in New York State, and features a can depicting a (grotesque) illustration of a man with his mouth sliced open from ear to ear with a razor with blood everywhere and a hand on their head pulling their eyes open.

Nightmare mentions on its Instagram page that the name for the beer originates from "1930s era Scotland" and an act of violence that was performed on "those unlucky enough to suffer at the hands of the Glasgow Razor Gangs".

The post adds: "while seeming like ancient history, in 2008 knife related injuries were reported every six hours and the Glasgow Smile was executed at minimum once a week."

Made using ingredients such as heather and  "wild bilberries grown in the Caledonian Forest of the Scots Pines", it seems that the beer - one of many Death Metal and Horror inspired beers they brew - has proven popular among artisan beer fans across the US.
