Considering the sheer number of AAA blockbusters that have reached cinemas over the last few months, you would expect a few box-office records to have been broken.
Over the months of April, May, and June, American cinemas have had Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Incredibles 2, Deadpool 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Ocean’s 8, Rampage, A Quiet Place, and Sicario 2 all playing.
As a result, the US box-office has posted its highest-grossing quarter ever,The Hollywood Reporter reporting the estimated revenue stands at $3.33 billion.
June was a particularly historic month, posting $1.268 billion – led by Incredibles 2 ($439.7 million) and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($264.8 million) – a 2.5% improvement on the previous record June, 2013, and up 19% on last year. The biggest single hit has been Avengers: Infinity War, which managed an impressive $672.5 million.
“This boom proves once again that the box office is a cyclical and unpredictable beast,” Paul Dergarabedian of comScore told the publication.
“The rumours of the death of the theatrical moviegoing experience are not only greatly exaggerated, but also misguided in their myopic misunderstanding of the very nature of the business.
“Certainly, there are obvious challenges and more competition for the entertainment dollar than at any time in our history, but the relevance of the big-screen experience remains undeniable.”
The previous biggest quarter came during the same period three years ago, when the box-office peaked at $3 billion thanks to Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, and Inside Out.
Considering three years from now, 2021, will see the release of Jurassic World 3, Fast and Furious 10, an untitled Marvel film, an untitled Pixar film, an unannounced DC movie, and an unannounced Disney-live action movie coming out over the same period, we should be looking at our next record-breaking Summer.
