Senior safety officials in the United States have faced questions on aviation safety for the first time since two American-made Boeing aircraft crashed within months of each other.

The executives from federal regulators have been giving evidence to a Senate sub-committee in Washington, DC.

The US transport secretary has defended the decision that made the US the last country to ground the aircraft after the crashes.
