The US Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District has set a target to reopen the Fort McHenry Channel by the end of May, aiming to restore access to the Port of Baltimore to normal capacity. This decision follows a recent incident where a cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting in the bridge's collapse into the channel and the tragic loss of six construction workers.
In a news release, the Army Corps of Engineers outlined their plan to establish a limited access channel to the Port of Baltimore by the end of April. Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, the USACE commanding general, acknowledged the ambitious nature of these timelines, noting that adverse weather conditions or changes in the wreckage's complexity could still impact the schedule.
Spellmon emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, 'We are working quickly and safely to clear the channel and restore full service at this port that is so vital to the nation.' He also highlighted the ongoing efforts to support the families of the missing workers and collaborate with partners in locating and recovering their loved ones.
