US airport to close forever after 107 years

  • The 107-year-old Santa Monica Airport in California is scheduled to close at the end of 2028.
  • The decision follows roughly 50 years of complaints from local residents regarding noise and adverse health impacts.
  • The 227-acre site, currently used by small private planes, will be transformed into a massive park space.
  • A 2017 settlement with the Federal Aviation Administration permitted the city to close the airport after 31 December 2028.
  • The city has released a draft Framework Diagram for the new park, outlining eight distinct districts, and is currently seeking public feedback.
