US airline adds multiple new routes in wake of Spirit bankruptcy

  • United Airlines has added new flights to 15 cities across the US and Central America following Spirit Airlines filing for bankruptcy for the second time in a year.
  • New domestic routes include services from Newark Liberty International Airport to Columbia, South Carolina, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, along with additional round-trip flights from Houston, Chicago, and Newark to various established destinations.
  • United will also introduce new weekly international flights connecting Houston with Guatemala City, San Salvador, and San Pedro Sula.
  • These additional flights are scheduled to commence on 6 January, with tickets becoming available for purchase from Thursday.
  • Spirit Airlines, which reported a $1.2 billion net loss in 2024 and cancelled flights to 11 US cities, stated it intends to remain in business despite United's competitive moves.
