US Air Force pilot killed in North Sea tragedy named as first lieutenant Kenneth Allen

A US Air Force pilot killed when his aircraft went down in the North Sea has been named.

1st Lt. Kenneth Allen, assistant chief of weapons and tactics for the 493rd Fighter Squadron, was identified by the US military.

The single-seater F-15C Eagle Jet, from the 48th Fighter Wing based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, crashed at around 9.40am on Monday while on a routine training exercise.

The pilots body was recovered following the incident, which happened 74 miles off the coast of Flamborough Head in Yorkshire.

A Coastguard helicopter and Bridlington and Scarborough RNLI lifeboats were sent to the area, and a Mayday broadcast, alerting other vessels nearby was also sent.

Kenneth Allen first arrived at the 48 th Fighter Wing in February of this year and is survived by his wife and parents, a statement confirmed.

Colonel Will Marshall, 48 th Fighter Wing commander, said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Lt. Allen, and mourn with his family and his fellow Reapers in the 493 rd Fighter Squadron.

"The tremendous outpouring of love and support from our communities has been a ray of light in this time of darkness."

The area where the plane came down is used by UK and US military jets for training missions, and it is being reported there may have been four military jets in the air at the time of the incident.
