FIFA, the Premier League and the UK Government are actively working on an agreement to enable players who represent their countries on international duty, to be available for selection by their clubs when they return.
However, there still remains an issue regarding the arrival of people who have travelled from the UK to Brazil. They’re still required to quarantine and that could prevent players from being eligible to play for their countries.
Manchester United and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani faces this dilemma when he is expected to travel to Brazil to face the five-time World Cup winners’ on October 14.
Argentina were prevented from using their Premier League based players in Sao Paulo earlier this month, after Brazilian health officials intervened and suspended the match.
According to Spanish newspaper El Pais Uruguay are taking the necessary steps to ensure that Cavani is available for the World Cup qualifier in Brazil next month.
The report states that Uruguay’s sports secretary has written to Brazil’s Ministry of Sports pleading for ‘reciprocity and goodwill’ to allow the United striker to be eligible for selection.
“More than 5,700 athletes have entered Uruguay and we have not made any distinction by country of origin." said sub-secretary Paulo Ferrari.
"A little while ago I sent the note and tomorrow the issue will continue with the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, the Brazilian Football Confederation and the Ministry of Health there so that they can continue working on a solution,”
Meanwhile, Brazil are confident the eight Premier League-based players they’ve called up for next month's World Cup qualifiers will be released.
