Urgent work begins to save Weston-super-Mare to Cribbs Causeway bus service

Urgent talks are underway to save a bus service that runs between Weston-super-Mare and Cribbs Causeway

Stagecoach West has confirmed that the X5, which also served Clevedon and Portishead, is being withdrawn on June 13 due to falling passenger numbers.

It is already a reduced service because of the coronavirus crisis.

The operator has apologised to users but said continuing to run the loss-making X5 is “sadly unsustainable”.

More than 670 people have signed a petition to save it, warning that key workers, college students and elderly residents rely on it.

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “The council recognises this is a difficult time for the transport sector and is keen that residents can still access employment, education and health services on the North Somerset bus network.

“Urgent work has therefore begun to explore options for a replacement service, however this will be subject to the council being able to secure the necessary resource in a constrained market.”

The X5 currently operates on a commercial basis, with no financial support from the council.

In a statement earlier this month, Stagecoach said: “Despite taking action to remove the quietest journeys back in January, we continued to lose more than £3,000 each week through to the beginning of March.

“This level of loss is sadly unsustainable.

“We're sorry for the impact this decision will have on the small number of regular customers using X5. We'll continue to run our current emergency timetable through to June 13.”

People who signed the petition to save the bus service said college students and the elderly would lose their independence.

Some said they would be unable to get to work without it.

One person said: Another said: “No idea how my son will start his first year at college. I work so I can't drive him there and back.

“Removing this service is going to affect our children's education and they are already affected thanks to coronavirus cancelling their exams.”

Councillor Huw James said: “Over 200 Weston College Students rely on this bus, I rely on this bus to visit Castlewood and Weston Town Hall.

“For those that cannot drive, the X5 is the spine connecting the coastal towns of North Somerset, and providing connectivity to essential services and to our communities.”
